This is the Digest from 2002 for the Category of: Next Generation Authors

35Stephen Ratliff
Well, I'm pretty sure that most people know me as a fan (kinda) of the Marrissa stories, and I just wanted to say that if you look back at his past works, Steve has improved immensely as a writer. He also is an incredibly nice guy, and very helpful to we new aspiring fanfic authors. So, my vote is for Steve. Arigato Ratliff Senpai!

27Patricia
I have enjoyed her stories for many years but her latest series---Bev and the Boys has kept me guessing as to what she'll have the characters do next! I love the fact that she knows the characters so well and writes them so naturally, that no matter what she does "to" them, it seems normal.
-- Damien Medina - Tue, 11 Mar 2003 17:45:00 -0500

32Sandi G -2002
A wonderful new author that has a lot of potential and I hope to see some future writings!
-- DocBevCulver - Thu, 13 Mar 2003 01:16:14 -0500

38Trexphile
Always love to read her stories, they are always full of love, hate, angst, humor. Simply put, she mixes everything and does it wonderfully and always keeps me wanting more!Excellent writer!!!
-- DocBevCulver - Thu, 13 Mar 2003 01:17:21 -0500

41Zoinky
An excellent writer. I truly enjoy reading her stories. Her work is always excellent and I always look for more of her stories.Excellent writer!
-- DocBevCulver - Thu, 13 Mar 2003 01:18:20 -0500

32Sandi G -2002
This author has done a fabulous job on her first story. I would never have guessed it was a first dip into the FanFic pool. She took a very delicate subject matter and handled it with extream care. I was a little worried when I read the summary and the ratings, I dont usually read those types of stories, but Sandi did a terrifc job. Truely an asset to the world of fanfiction. Hope to see more from her soon.
-- Char - Sat, 15 Mar 2003 20:04:15 -0500

33Sara Goose
Sara, in the last year, has really impressed me with her short stories. It's hard to say which of her stories I like best - she writes characters faithfully. May she write longer and more involved stories soon!
-- Lori - Sun, 16 Mar 2003 11:19:15 -0500

31Rocky
Rocky has a flair for Voyager, no question about it. I've enjoyed some (not nearly enough) of Virtual Season 7.5, all of Glory Days, and I don't even watch the series. And, quite aside from her excellent writing, she's also a very encouraging and discriminating beta, whose suggestions have made a huge difference in that last novel I wrote, and have produced some promising plot bunnies for this year. I'm sure I'm not the only one she's taken time out of her busy RL to dispense writerly first aid to -- hats off to Rocky for being a consistent and positive force in the fandom.
-- Lori - Sun, 16 Mar 2003 11:26:01 -0500

34Seema
It's all her fault! Well, not everything - but it's her fault I've become more involved in various lists and chats. It's also her fault that I've started to send more feedback and be a halfway decent member of fandom. It's probably also her fault that she's one of the nicest, most helpful fans I've had the pleasure to correspond with. I've thoroughly enjoyed her fic, what little there is of it from last year, and I'm hoping she continues to write, and write more! All her stories are faithful to the canon characters, and the care she takes in realizing them is obvious. She's also a great beta and thankfully insufficiently reluctant - a credit to the fandom any way you look at it. Here's hoping for more fic from Seema this year!
-- Lori - Sun, 16 Mar 2003 11:44:46 -0500

10Djinn
Djinn had a banner year in TNG this year. It amazes me, really amazes me, just how *good* she is and the ability to move easily across fandoms is something I seriously envy. Djinn's foray into TNG was exceptional this year. I loved the way all three of her fics this year explored the TNG characters' psyche deeply, giving us (the lucky readers!) more to appreciate about Picard and company. "A Chance Encounter" is a lovely fic about Worf and Troi - something TPTB dropped the ball on, but Djinn ran with it beautifully. "Collateral Damage" has to be my favorite of her TNG fics this year - really lovely voice and writing dealing with the aftermath of Nemesis. And finally, "Echoes and Voices" gives yet another look at Picard's feelings after his encounter with Shinzon. Terrific job this year, Djinn, and I hope to see more from you in the coming year!
-- Seema - Sun, 16 Mar 2003 13:48:40 -0500

22Lori
What can I say about Lori other than she is a brilliant and intelligent writer? More importantly, her "On the Madhouse Boards" is possibly one of the most complex and intriguing novels I've read in Trek to date. Lori spends so much time crafting her fic, writing, editing, chopping away at it until she has a finished product. It's evident how much she cares for her characters and what she's doing by the amount of care she takes in her writing process. She has managed to do the impossible - write believable Picard/Troi and not only that, create a wonderful universe where this relationship makes complete and perfect sense. Lori keeps her fics in the parameters of the TNG universe, but manages to introduce other OCs who are wonderfully three-dimensional in themselves. Bravo, Lori, on yet another fine fic!
-- Seema - Sun, 16 Mar 2003 13:52:57 -0500

21Kyra Cullinan
Kyra is an intriguing new voice to TNG and I hope to see more fic from her in the future.
-- Seema - Sun, 16 Mar 2003 13:53:29 -0500

24monkee
monkee is another author whose ability to cross series is unparalleled. Here, she did a lovely job with "One Friendship."
-- Seema - Sun, 16 Mar 2003 13:55:09 -0500

28Paula Stiles
Paula is a master at the drabbles and she's always a joy to read. It was wonderful to have a TNG entry from her this year.
-- Seema - Sun, 16 Mar 2003 13:55:45 -0500

31Rocky
Welcome to TNG, Rocky! Rocky's "What I Did On My Risian Vacation" was lots of fun and I hope to see more from her this year.
-- Seema - Sun, 16 Mar 2003 13:56:45 -0500

33Sara Goose
Sara is doing a fantastic job in TNG her first year here on ASC. "Drowning in a Strawberry Daquiri" is a clever response to a challenge and provides another view of Deanna Troi that we were sorely lacking previously. "A New Kind of Oridinary" is a wonderful Worf/Troi story - one we need to see more of (hint, hint!)! It's been a wonderful year for Sara and I'm afraid I'm being a bit selfish but I want more!
-- Seema - Sun, 16 Mar 2003 13:59:26 -0500

35Stephen Ratliff
Stephen has so much on his plate, yet he continues to maintain his enthusiasm for Marissa and the universe he created for her. His most recent story is his best yet and shows just how much Marissa has grown up. Good job this year, Stephen, juggling both your ASC and writing hats!
-- Seema - Sun, 16 Mar 2003 14:00:49 -0500

38Trexphile
Trexphile had me on the floor with "Not Good Not Good at All." I think it'd be a fair thing to say that she is one of the best P/C writers around and I really wish she wrote more. Good job!
-- Seema - Sun, 16 Mar 2003 14:01:33 -0500

39Ventura33
Ventura33 is another person whose fics, regardless of series, put a new slant on a situation. "Casualities" is a beautifully written, thought-provoking fic. Lovely work.
-- Seema - Sun, 16 Mar 2003 14:02:53 -0500

38Trexphile
Trexphile has such a grasp of how fanfic should be written. Very talented author. She really makes you 'feel' what the characters are feeling.
-- Sandi G - Sun, 16 Mar 2003 20:19:03 -0500

10Djinn
Djinn especially impressed me with her "Nemesis" fic this year. I was continually blown away by it, especially "Collateral Damage." She just gets the TNG crew and is able to present them from a unique perspective. "Chance Encounter" was among my favourite stories this year, and it was such a treat to see Worf presented in context.
-- Sara - Thu, 20 Mar 2003 01:38:53 -0500

22Lori
Lori wrote some of my favourite TNG stories this year, including "Pilgrim" and "Blemishes." These two really show her range in this series, both in terms of style and universe. "On The Madhouse Boards" really belongs in a category of its own. It's a complex, realistic, unique novel and Lori did a masterful job on it. Her OCs in this universe, however, are perhaps my favourite parts of Lori's writing. And she always keeps me wondering what's going to happen next.
-- Sara - Thu, 20 Mar 2003 01:43:28 -0500

34Seema
Seema did a great job of providing a different perspective on Picard/Crusher this year, and really gave me something to chew on, a future to consider, with her story.
-- Sara - Thu, 20 Mar 2003 01:46:15 -0500

35Stephen Ratliff
Stephen is perhaps the most multi-tasking person I've ever seen. He does so much for ficcers and readers on ASC, plus he's somehow able to fit his own stories in there? The man deserves a round of applause!
-- Sara - Thu, 20 Mar 2003 01:48:17 -0500

38Trexphile
Trexphile provided a humourous look at a Betazoid wedding and definitely made me laugh aloud on more than one occasion while reading about it.
-- Sara - Thu, 20 Mar 2003 01:50:02 -0500

1Alara Rogers
I can't think of anyone who writes Q so well as Alara--she seems to understand him like no one else and she could certainly give Peter David, let alone TPTB, a real run for their money in that respect. I was very happy to see the Prologue and first story in the Do It Again universe and am really looking forward to reading more of these stories in the coming year.
-- Rocky - Thu, 20 Mar 2003 08:42:54 -0500

10Djinn
Djinn is an incredibly versatile writer who writes with equal ease in any and all series, but I would be remiss if I didn't mention her Nemesis codas. Collateral Damage and Echoes and Voices are very different stories but each one fills a very important niche to help make sense of the movie and deliver the emotional impact that I found lacking on the screen. Djinn's Chance Encounter is also a lovely story which finally does right by the characters.
-- Rocky - Thu, 20 Mar 2003 08:44:22 -0500

22Lori
Lori is the first author who comes to mind when I think of TNG. Nobody else writes the characters, particularly Picard, Crusher and Troi, with such breathtaking clarity and believability. Sitting down to one of Lori's stories, whether it is a long novel like On The Madhouse Boards, or one of her shorter pieces like Pilgrim or The Big Boy's Guide To Venous Occlusion or one of her wonderful parodies like Blemishes, the reader is in for a real treat. I am continually blown away by the sheer complexity of her stories, the interweaving of numerous plot strands without slighting any of them and her incredibly *alien* species that she invents so effortlessly. The language is also beautifully done--the images from Picard's breakdown in Madhouse, for example, are going to stay with me for a long, long time. Special note must be made of the rich and fascinating AU Captain and Counselor series, of which there were three new stories this year, that is remarkable in how it has allowed the characters to grow and change without ever becoming unrecognizable. I can't wait to see what this author comes up with next.
-- Rocky - Thu, 20 Mar 2003 08:45:39 -0500

24monkee
Monkee is one of those writers who is equally at home in any series, but I must especially make mention of her contribution to TNG this year. One Friendship is a beautiful tale, and one that I know I will be going back to time and again.
-- Rocky - Thu, 20 Mar 2003 08:46:33 -0500

33Sara Goose
If I didn't know it before, I would never have believed that Sara is a newcomer to ASC this year. Her writing is polished, and she has a real knack for characterizations and exploring feelings and motivations in just a few well-chosen words . I especially enjoy her work with Worf and Troi in stories like A New Kind of Ordinary as well as Drowning In A Strawberry Daiquiri. This is definitely an author whose work I'd love to see more of.
-- Rocky - Thu, 20 Mar 2003 08:47:23 -0500

34Seema
My favorite P/C story of the year was Habitual Choices because of the way Seema cut right through to the heart of the matter and showed the essence of the Picard/Crusher relationship throughout the years, past, present and a future in which the characters finally acknowledge that it is time to move on. In so many ways, this is the ultimate TNG story in how it deals with issues that were woven through the series, as well as the theme of parting and change in Nemesis.
-- Rocky - Thu, 20 Mar 2003 08:48:17 -0500

10Djinn
I enjoy Djinn's take on the TNG characters. It's always a pleasure to run across someone who's willing to pay special attention to characters and produce stories that are not only well-written, but are unique and free of fanfic cliches.
-- lori - Sat, 22 Mar 2003 11:48:07 -0500

34Seema
Seema writes everything well, so it's no surprise she did some great work featuring TNG characters. Her Picard/Crusher gives the pair a lot of respect and treats them very well. Kudos to Seema for her (scant but worthy) work in TNG, and my appreciation for venturing into the realm of odd pairings with Picard/Janeway.
-- lori - Sat, 22 Mar 2003 11:53:50 -0500

31Rocky
Welcome to TNG. Please come back again soon! A drabble is not enough, I'm sorry. You don't have to write a novel - just more stories. You've done wonders for Picard's reputation - perhaps you can explain why Alexander grew up so fast?
-- lori - Sat, 22 Mar 2003 12:11:05 -0500

10Djinn
Djinn is a special fanfic writer. She takes unusual pairings and makes them plausible, sticking close to canon and yet developing her own unique stories. Her characters are interesting and well developed, her plots are complex and tight. I have yet to be disappointed with one of her stories.
-- Jerie - Sun, 23 Mar 2003 18:29:05 -0500

22Lori
Lori is an amazing author. She does everything well. Her plots are long, involved, well thought out, complex, and tight. Her characterization is excellent. And no one writes descriptions of aliens better than Lori. She can take a cliche idea and spin it into a tale that is anything but a cliche. She also has a wicked sense of humor that will have you rolling on the floor laughing. Don't miss any of her stories.
-- Jerie - Sun, 23 Mar 2003 18:34:14 -0500

33Sara Goose
Sara is an author who takes a normal situation between characters and turns it into something special. She adds layers of meaning and emotion in her stories that always give the reader something new to think about. I just wish she'd write more.
-- Jerie - Sun, 23 Mar 2003 18:54:31 -0500

34Seema
Seema always seems to come up with stories that are unique and special. Whether she's writing angst, action, parody, or even deliberate bad!fic, she creates settings that take the reader to the characters, making you believe you are there with them. She consistently delivers quality fiction. Her stories are always a treat.
-- Jerie - Sun, 23 Mar 2003 19:02:33 -0500

31Rocky
Rocky's stories are always well crafted, well told and true to Trek canon. I look forward to reading each one.
-- Jerie - Sun, 23 Mar 2003 19:38:46 -0500

22Lori
Lori is still TNG. I saw the series back when it was on the air, but the Picard, Troi, Crusher, Riker and LaForge in my mind are all hers - not to mention the original characters she's added to the mix. She's taken the boring cast of a show I never cared much for and made me interested in them, made squicky pairings seem natural, and kept them flying without ever losing her grasp on their canon characterization or the spirit of Trek. As long as she keeps writing TNG I'll keep reading it.
-- Jemima - Sun, 23 Mar 2003 21:39:18 -0500

1Alara Rogers
It's always a pleasure to read an Alara Rogers Q story! Her ability to take the incomprehensible Q and make it/him/her/them accessible, funny, appealing, and still totally Qish is impressive and enviable. Rock solid writing, as well as witty dialogue, and unique pronoun structures, don't hurt either.
-- Djinn - Tue, 25 Mar 2003 00:44:11 -0500

3Ananke (RoseKira)
Ananke has crafted a beautiful story in Phoenix. Her TNG voices are spot-on and the sentiment is sweet without being cloying. Well done!
-- Djinn - Tue, 25 Mar 2003 00:45:22 -0500

21Kyra Cullinan
Kyra Cullinan is a wonderful new voice in the TNG arena. Can't wait to see what she does next!
-- Djinn - Tue, 25 Mar 2003 00:45:36 -0500

22Lori
What can you say? If it's TNG, it must be Lori. Every year she writes a story that surprises me and this year it was Pilgrim. I thought I knew what I was getting into, but it was darker than I expected. I look for that in a Lori story, the twist on the perspective that takes what you know and transforms it into something you didn't expect. But she's not just good at serious stuff. Blemishes, OTOH, had me laughing out loud. Wonderful talent! Great year, Lori!
-- Djinn - Tue, 25 Mar 2003 00:45:53 -0500

24monkee
Monkee gave us a wonderful tale in One Friendship, spotlighting Lily and Zef in a way that made me remember why I liked them so much in the movie. Well done!
-- Djinn - Tue, 25 Mar 2003 00:46:07 -0500

31Rocky
Nice twist on Picard's vacation. Do more TNG, Rocky!
-- Djinn - Tue, 25 Mar 2003 00:46:20 -0500

33Sara Goose
Lovely stories from Sara this year and the I can't wait to see what she does next!
-- Djinn - Tue, 25 Mar 2003 00:46:35 -0500

34Seema
In Habitual Choices, Seema gave us a lovely Picard/Crusher story that was also a fantastic Nemesis coda. Seema delivers every single time she gives us a story, and you just can't say that about many authors. Great year, Seema, can't wait to see what you come up with next!
-- Djinn - Tue, 25 Mar 2003 00:46:52 -0500

36Temporal Rift
A writer that combines lyricism with originality, I can't wait to see what ze comes up with next year.
-- Djinn - Tue, 25 Mar 2003 00:47:08 -0500

38Trexphile
Not Good, Not Good at All is the funniest P/C story I have read! Trexphile has wonderful humor, a glorious ability to spin plot, and dead-on characterizations. Can't wait to see what's next!!
-- Djinn - Tue, 25 Mar 2003 00:47:20 -0500

39Ventura33
In Casualties, Ventura gives us a touching look at TNG and RL. Well done!
-- Djinn - Tue, 25 Mar 2003 00:47:33 -0500

1Alara Rogers
I liked Alara's "Doing It Again Arc." No one does a better job of making the Q understandable and I like the imaginative premise that forms its basis. It features very strong writing and some nice insights and observations about character.
-- Rabble Rouser - Tue, 25 Mar 2003 12:14:50 -0500

10Djinn
Djinn contributed more than one fine TNG story to ASC this year and I especially loved her two post-Nemesis stories. Her story Chance Encounter did a good job giving us the scene between Worf and Troi that we never got from TPTB. Djinn did justice to both of Troi's canonical relationships, that between her and Riker, as well as that between her and Worf and does a lovely job of capturing Troi's voice and personality. My favorite post-Nemesis story of any posted this year on ASC has to be Collateral Damage. I thought Djinn did a wonderful job capturing each of the Next Generation characters voices and personalities in the story as well as the relationships between them. What made the story for me and causes me to count it as a favorite though is the scene between Geordi and Spot in particular, which I found very moving. Finally, there is "Echoes and Voices," a fascinating Picard character study that is very thought-provoking.
-- Rabble Rouser - Tue, 25 Mar 2003 12:16:40 -0500

19Kevin Johnston
I liked Kevin Johnston's "Firestorm," a solid, interesting action-adventure yarn.
-- Rabble Rouser - Tue, 25 Mar 2003 12:17:25 -0500

21Kyra Cullinan
I liked Kyra Cullihan's P/C piece, "The Speed of Sound." It was lovely, lyrical writing and packs some fascinating insights into character and concepts very economically in its very short, compact space.
-- Rabble Rouser - Tue, 25 Mar 2003 12:18:08 -0500

22Lori
Lori posted more than one well written Next Generation story to ASC this year. Her parody of Nemesis, Blemishes, was very funny with its witty asides. Pilgrim was an interesting Troi POV piece with some interesting speculations about her perceptions and abilities. Also very well written is On the Madhouse Boards, which is interesting for how it shows the shattering of a mind as well as being genuine sci-fi with some interesting aliens. Together those stories make a big contribution to quality Next Gen fic this year. Lori is a very skilled writer, among the best to have worked in the series.
-- Rabble Rouser - Tue, 25 Mar 2003 12:19:55 -0500

24monkee
I enjoyed Monkee's story "Friendship One." I liked how deftly she wove ENT and VOY canon events into the tale and liked how she depicted Soval. The friendship shown between Lily Sloane and Zephrem Cochrane was quite appealing as they worked together to bring the stars within reach.
-- Rabble Rouser - Tue, 25 Mar 2003 12:20:47 -0500

31Rocky
I liked her Risan tale.
-- Rabble Rouser - Tue, 25 Mar 2003 12:21:24 -0500

33Sara Goose
Her Troi/Worf A New Kind of Ordinary, does a very good job at showing the dynamic between the couple. Drowning in a Strawberry Daiquiri was another Troi piece that I thought did a very nice job with the character. Both short stories, each in their own way, are lovely character pieces.
-- Rabble Rouser - Tue, 25 Mar 2003 12:22:14 -0500

34Seema
Habitual Choices is a wonderfully written tale of the dynamic between Picard and Beverly. Seema does a great job not just of capturing the characters and their relationship but of making us feel the sadness of all the goodbyes. It's a terrific post-Nemesis story.
-- Rabble Rouser - Tue, 25 Mar 2003 12:23:08 -0500

36Temporal Rift
Temporal Rift's one story posted this year, the P/C "La Belle Dame Sans Regrets" featured lyrical, deft writing. She's very good at evoking Picard's voice. Unlike many who write him romantically, Temporal Rift doesn't make him overly sentimental but lets him keep his reserve and dry wit.
-- Rabble Rouser - Tue, 25 Mar 2003 12:23:56 -0500

38Trexphile
I thought Not Good, Not Good at All was just lovely. Loved both Picard and Beverly and it is just plain lighthearted fun--and often very funny. I couldn't help but think of it when I heard Picard's line in Nemesis ab working out in the gym. And the last scene was very sweet.
-- Rabble Rouser - Tue, 25 Mar 2003 12:24:54 -0500

39Ventura33
Ventura's "Casualties" was quite affecting in how it described Picard dealing with the events of Wolf 359.
-- Rabble Rouser - Tue, 25 Mar 2003 12:25:38 -0500

22Lori
I admit, I ran out of time and couldn't read nearly as much as I planned this year. But surely Lori stands out as one of the most accomplished writers in this series. Her work is uniformly interesting, disciplined and intricate. Her presentation of Picard and Troi - not just as a couple, but as individual characters - is masterful. It's amazingly easy to see her work as an extension of the series, not just an alternate universe. And when Lori turns her sense of humor loose, watch out. Her depth and breadth are to be envied.
-- Penny Proctor - Tue, 25 Mar 2003 18:32:34 -0500
