22Royal And Prime Directives by Stephen Ratliff
A great story, possessing a wealth of interesting original characters. As you can tell by the title, this is a Prime Directive story, one set on a planet where Medieval humans were seeded by aliens. The fact that the crew has to deal with subjecting fellow humans (including Federation citizens) to the PD makes this one distinct, but the real stars are the marooned captain and his family. Whether you like or hate PD stories, this story definately deserves a read.

3Blemishes by Lori
This parody of the latest Star Trek movie had me absolutely howling. Once again, Lori's wicked sense of humor comes through.

4Casualties by Ventura33
A very fitting tribute.

5Chance Encounter by Djinn
I loved this look at Worf and Troi, meeting years after they had served together. I was annoyed that we were never shown any resolution to that relationship, as well as the way TPTB had Worf show up in "Insurrection" without a single mention of Jadzia's death. A scene like the one between Worf and Troi here would have been perfect. Djinn struck exactly the right notes--everything from acknowledging Troi's past with Worf to her sensing his sadness and loss over Jadzia to her assuring him that he would be able to move on eventually. And I loved that his relationship with Jadzia wrought some changes in him that Troi was able to detect, like a sense of humor.

6Collateral Damage by Djinn
This story contains all of the scenes I wish had been in "Nemesis"! The character's reactions were so true--I can actually see these taking place. For some reason, Data's death didn't have much emotional impact on me while I was in the theater. Maybe because I knew it was coming, maybe because I was too conscious of the many parallels to Spock's death in TWOK, maybe because B-4 seemed to be a 'reset button' waiting to happen. But reading this story made me feel *something*--Geordi's scene was particularly poignant, both his interaction with Spot ("he's not coming back, girl") and his final comment to B-4 ("I just don't think I can do this again.")
-- Rocky - Wed, 12 Mar 2003 05:37:13 -0500

7Data the Android by Paula Stiles
This really captures the essence of the movie--and in a more entertaining manner.
-- Rocky - Wed, 12 Mar 2003 05:37:50 -0500

8Drowning in a Strawberry Daiquiri by Sara Goose
Geordi and Deanna is an unusual combination, but that's the point of this story about assumptions and how well you really know another person. Some wonderful insights into the characters minds', particularly Deanna's.
-- Rocky - Wed, 12 Mar 2003 05:38:27 -0500

9Echoes and Voices by Djinn
One of my initial reactions upon seeing "Nemesis" was of course this was not the first time Picard has been confronted with a distorted image of himself, the 'evil twin' Djinn refers to. I really liked all of the parallels drawn between Locutus and Picard, as well as the obvious ones between Picard and Shinzon, and then the eerie likeness between Shinzon and Locutus. The eternal conflict between good and evil--any decent man would fear learning of the existence of evil in his inner self, but Picard has actually met his, face to face. The nightmare of the Borg implants erupting not through Picard's own cheek, but through Shinzon's, is telling indeed.
-- Rocky - Wed, 12 Mar 2003 05:39:17 -0500

19One Friendship by monkee
I really liked the character of Lily from "First Contact" and enjoyed this look at her and Cochrane a few years later. Monkee did a nice job of 'connecting the dots' from the relative devastation of Earth's society at the end of the movie to the current much-improved state in Archer's time, together with references from TNG ("Encounter at Farpoint") and even VOY ("Friendship One"). And for some reason I find the portrayal of Ambassador Soval consistent with how he is presented in ENT canon and yet his behavior and motivations are much more logical (and plausible). Much more in line with the view of Vulcans in the previous 4 Star Trek series. I especially like the title of this story--it's not only a reference to the probe (and VOY episode) whose costs would be so much more than Cochrane could ever imagine, but also to the relationship between Lily and Cochrane, and perhaps even a hint to the eventual TOS-era (and beyond) relationship between Vulcans and Humans.
-- Rocky - Wed, 12 Mar 2003 05:40:21 -0500

22Royal And Prime Directives by Stephen Ratliff
An ambitious and rollicking story in the ongoing adventures of Marissa Picard.

14House Of K'tar by Zoinky
A wonderful story. I truly enjoyed reading it. This author shows true talent and works her magic once again.Excellent!

4Casualties by Ventura33
Breathtakingly poigant and well-written. Picard's character is very well-captured, his thoughts right on target for his experiences and personality. The story itself is also timeless in that it could be applied to the anniversary of any major tragedy of any time and be an insightful reflection. Wonderful piece of work.

3Blemishes by Lori
Bwahaha! No one parodies like Lori and this take on Nemesis is no exception! Just avoid having beverages nearby while reading.

4Casualties by Ventura33
Meg did a lovely job with this fic. It's a true tribute to heroes. Thank you for writing this.
-- Seema - Fri, 14 Mar 2003 12:41:11 -0500

5Chance Encounter by Djinn
It's always aggravated me that TPTB didn't close the W/T storyline properly, especially after Jadzia's death. But that's what fic is for and Djinn does a lovely job of bringing closure to the relationship. Worf and Troi are very much in character and finally, the things that needed to be said are said. I also enjoyed the R/T interaction at the end - it sounded and felt very true to both characters. Beautiful job.
-- Seema - Fri, 14 Mar 2003 12:45:22 -0500

6Collateral Damage by Djinn
Djinn has a really nice way with these TNG characters and I love this look at all of them at the end of Nemesis. I especially enjoyed the parallels between the damage done to Picard and that to Deanna. Djinn manages to get under their skin and really show how these characters are coping with their loss.
-- Seema - Fri, 14 Mar 2003 12:50:05 -0500

7Data the Android by Paula Stiles
Very nicely done! This fic scans beautifully.
-- Seema - Fri, 14 Mar 2003 12:50:58 -0500

8Drowning in a Strawberry Daiquiri by Sara Goose
I love this fic because it challenges preconceptions in terms of how much you really think you know someone and then realize you don't really know. Lovely writing and I love the device of an observer telling the story. Nicely done.
-- Seema - Fri, 14 Mar 2003 12:53:02 -0500

9Echoes and Voices by Djinn
This fic captures what Picard must have been thinking and feeling in the aftermath of Nemesis perfectly. Yet another lovely post-Nemesis fic from Djinn.
-- Seema - Fri, 14 Mar 2003 12:54:48 -0500

12Heard in Silence by Aura
An interesting remix on "Attached." The conversation between Troi and Picard was very well-written.

18Of Friends and Lovers by Ananke
Beverly is the perfect narrator for this fic, being strong for everyone else on Enterprise until the most unlikely of individuals finally breaks her resolve. Beautifully done.
-- Seema - Fri, 14 Mar 2003 13:00:45 -0500

19One Friendship by monkee
In light of what happens to the One Friendship probe, this is a very, very interesting story. I love the interactions between Zef and Lily here and the interference of Soval - who is the perfect Enterprise-era Vulcan. I enjoyed their defiance and the way Lily was still inclined to hold out hope despite knowing what the future holds for humanity. Another superb fic from monkee!
-- Seema - Fri, 14 Mar 2003 13:04:00 -0500

22Royal And Prime Directives by Stephen Ratliff
Stephen spent seven years writing this story and it really shows! It's his best Marissa fic to date and features romance, adventure, action, plot. Stephen continues to show his enthusiasm for Marissa and the universe he has created for her. He should be justifiably proud of this one.

24What I Did On My Risian Vacation by Rocky
Cute! Obviously, Picard left a vital bit of information out when he decided to take reading material along with him on his Risa vacation. Everything is all clear now. Nice job with filling in the blanks!

Wow, Rocky writing TNG? :) What an illuminating short about a supposedly-straightlaced captain. LOL!

19One Friendship by monkee
How nice to see Lily and Zefram again! Tying First Contact into pre-Enterprise makes sense, too, as monkee sets up the beginnings of the conflict between the Vulcans and the Terrans.

3Blemishes by Lori
A cute send up of the movie. And scary sometimes. My favorite part was this: Riker: Defensive maneuver Kirk Epsilon! Worf: But the other vessel has no ears to strike with both hands! Hee! I wondered what they meant too! There were too many fun parts to try to nail them all down here, go read this for yourself!!
-- Djinn - Mon, 17 Mar 2003 21:19:28 -0500

8Drowning in a Strawberry Daiquiri by Sara Goose
A quick, speculative look at Deanna by a fond if mysterious observer. A very sweet story.
-- Djinn - Mon, 17 Mar 2003 21:19:57 -0500

19One Friendship by monkee
Monkee has a wonderful way of capturing characters that you see once on screen and then never again, bringing them to vivid and often touching life. This story is an excellent example. Lily and Zephram were such vibrant characters in First Contact, and Lily was just too much fun (and she had the best line hands down: "You broke your little ships"). Monkee does right by her, and gets some good licks in at Soval. Including making him listen to booming rock music! I can only approve of that!
-- Djinn - Mon, 17 Mar 2003 21:21:13 -0500

24What I Did On My Risian Vacation by Rocky
Snerk! So is Picard a stick-in-the-mud or isn't he? You be the judge. LOL!

4Casualties by Ventura33
In Casualties, Ventura33 has crafted a touching tribute to both the Trek remembrance of the Borg attack as well as our own, more real, feelings about 9/11. There are an interesting number of parallels drawn on the nature of the attackers and the aftermath of their deeds. Well done, Ventura33. This is a lovely story.
-- Djinn - Mon, 17 Mar 2003 21:26:32 -0500

14House Of K'tar by Zoinky
Having read, and been blown away by teh first story about K'Tar, I didn't know what to think when i saw a sequel. I am so glad I read this. This author, Zoinky, created a charactor that is absolutely wonderful! A true joy to read.

2A Feast I Don't Like In The Least by Rob Morris
This was an entertaining Christmas fable with shades of the Grinch. It had some serious things to say about the nature of the holiday while not forgetting to have some magic in reserve to save the day. And it even had a cute last line. Very enjoyable story.
-- Rabble Rouser - Wed, 19 Mar 2003 10:28:39 -0500

3Blemishes by Lori
Having seen Nemesis, I really appreciate this parody. I got a chuckle right from the start at the "anvil of foreshadowing" and enjoyed the many "anvils" that followed. This story was as much a MSTing of Nemesis as parody as we were treated to snarky dead on asides on the action and the script format. One thing for sure, the conversation in Lori's story between Picard and Janeway is a lot more fun and much more memorable than the one in the movie! Liked her explanation for why "First Contact" and "Insurrection" can exist in the same series--sure works for me.
-- Rabble Rouser - Wed, 19 Mar 2003 10:29:25 -0500

4Casualties by Ventura33
What happened at Wolf 359 seems the perfect parallel to 9/11 and Picard the perfect POV to be scrolling down through that list of names. I watched the ceremony where the list of the casualties of 9/11 were spoken aloud waiting for a certain name and like that observance, this story made me think of all those other names who also belonged to a person with their own lives and left behind so many to grieve. That is powerful, evocative writing that can do that and make you feel haunted the way this stark story does, especially given that it packs it into what is actually a very small space.

5Chance Encounter by Djinn
I enjoyed this chance encounter between Troi and Worf. I like how it's Riker's concern for Worf that draws Deanna to him--I thought that said a lot about Riker's character and the loyalty and camaraderie between the old command crew. I love the whole conversation between Worf and Deanna about Jadzia. Everything said about grief in their exchange not only rang true, but was in Worf's and Deanna's own authentic voices and exactly in character as Worf asks if he dishonors Jadzia by not being able to move on and Troi reassures him. I wish we could have had seen a scene like this in canon. "Chance Encounter" stands out to me as a lovely and moving story but most of all because I feel like I'm eavesdropping so vividly does Djinn writes these voices. A pleasure to read from beginning to end.
-- Rabble Rouser - Wed, 19 Mar 2003 10:30:50 -0500

6Collateral Damage by Djinn
I loved "Collateral Damage" for how it nailed the voices and personalities of the Next Generation crew. This story dealt with the aftermath of the events in the latest Star Trek movie Nemesis, giving us scenes I wish I we could have seen. All the characters and the effects of the events on them are handled sensitively and poignantly and I appreciated each and every point of view. The story drew me in right form the beginning and never let me go until it was finished. The way Geordi La Forge was drawn was particularly vivid, especially notable since he's a character I don't often see in fan fiction at all. Djinn really made me feel for him here. I also loved the way the relationship between Picard and Beverly Crusher was drawn. I found it poignant how she ruthlessly pushed whatever romantic feelings she had aside in order to help her captain. I also feel that Djinn really evokes Troi strongly in "Collateral Damage," giving her strength of character while not making her unrecognizable in order to do it and making her as plausible in her role as counselor as in her personal relationship with Riker and her professional one with Picard. Like all of Djinn's stories this is great writing, smoothly narrated and with fine characterizations. A pleasure to read and my favorite TNG story posted this year.
-- Rabble Rouser - Wed, 19 Mar 2003 10:31:42 -0500

7Data the Android by Paula Stiles
I enjoyed this little filk based on "Frosty the Snowman." I thought it was a very apt adaptation of the original material, very clever, and it certainly put a smile on my face.
-- Rabble Rouser - Wed, 19 Mar 2003 10:32:36 -0500

8Drowning in a Strawberry Daiquiri by Sara Goose
I liked this view of Troi and it was interesting to see her thru Geordi given that the two were never shown as particularly close. But then that's the point, that Troi is the one who knows everyone better than they know themselves, but has a talent for seeming better known than she really is, and for wearing that serene mask. I like how this story comes around in the end to both a sense of familiarity but leaves some of that mystery. The story is skillfully and economically written. In less than one hundred words in paints a vivid picture.
-- Rabble Rouser - Wed, 19 Mar 2003 10:33:33 -0500

9Echoes and Voices by Djinn
I love a story like this one that can get me to rethink my assumptions and make me see implications of screened Star Trek I had never thought of. Everything in this story can be plausibly drawn from what we saw in "Star Trek: Nemesis," but it was so subtle I never noticed the implications for Picard and others. The parallel Djinn draws between Shinzon and Locutus is simply brilliant and very well developed in "Echoes and Voices." Djinn digs so well into Picard, tunes into his thoughts so well, you would think she has a direct pipeline into the captain. Djinn hits his voice exactly and I think that can be difficult to do. The author writes movingly of Data and Troi as well and there is some interesting speculation on Data's actions at the end of the film. This story is pretty short, but so much is packed into it, that the energy is palpable. Yet the story never feels as if it needs to be expanded upon. This is powerful, moving wonderful writing with lots of insights to savor and haunting, vivid imagery. This is the kind of story you find yourself thinking about long after you have read it and rewards re-reading. "Echoes and Voices" in my humble opinion is one of the best TNG stories written this year and a great coda to the film "Star Trek: Nemesis."
-- Rabble Rouser - Wed, 19 Mar 2003 10:34:41 -0500

10Firestorm by Kevin Johnston
This story provides plenty of intrigue and action and the bridge scenes are well done. I liked the appearance of some unexpected players in the story--especially Spock and Scotty. The story has some interesting reflections on the differences between the two generations and has more than one unexpected twist too. "Firestorm" is a longer story than most, flirting with novel length, but it never lost my interest and is definitely worth the read. This was a good, solid action-adventure yarn that also handled characters and their relationships well.
-- Rabble Rouser - Wed, 19 Mar 2003 10:35:12 -0500

12Heard in Silence by Aura
Some interesting reflections and good Picard voice.

14House Of K'tar by Zoinky
This Bev in Klingon guise story was fun. I liked K'tar's group of "misfit" warriors.

16My Q by Aura
I thought his story of Q was fun. I especially relished that last line from Picard.
-- Rabble Rouser - Wed, 19 Mar 2003 10:37:05 -0500

18Of Friends and Lovers by Ananke
I liked this post-Nemesis tale. The characters and their interrelationships are nicely captured and it never slips into the maudlin or sugary sweet as it so easily could given the subject. It is nicely written and weaves other canon events and characters into the story well.
-- Rabble Rouser - Wed, 19 Mar 2003 10:37:41 -0500

19One Friendship by monkee
Monkee sets the scene so well and the relationship between Lily and Zephram Cochrane so vividly right from the start of the story. I love how Monkee conveys Soval’s betrayal of his emotions and Lily's bemusement because of it. And given that Cochrane ties into ENT, TOS, and TNG, it's nice to have a Voyager slant with Friendship One too. I like how the theme of that early era of interstellar exploration and the friendship between these two all tie into the title. "One Friendship" is one fun story. Very, very enjoyable.

3Blemishes by Lori
The funniest thing I've read in far too long. At least since the first time I read it. The setting descriptions were priceless. And the truth behind Betazoid weddings is finally revealed! The Disney song was definitely put to excellent use, as well. I enjoyed "Nemesis" but Lori puts such a lovely spin on it, that I just want to mock it to death.Did I mention this was funny?
-- Sara - Wed, 19 Mar 2003 21:37:15 -0500

5Chance Encounter by Djinn
This is a wonderful look at the relationship between Deanna and Worf that takes into account their seperate and connected histories. Djinn does a lovely job on this one; her characterization of all three is incredible. I especially like how we see so many aspects of Worf, even though the story is not written from his point-of-view. We are presented with Deanna's perspective on Worf's situation, but with rich enough detail that we can make our own conclusions.
-- Sara - Wed, 19 Mar 2003 21:46:06 -0500

6Collateral Damage by Djinn
Djinn does a marvelous job at filling in the emotional gaps left by Nemesis. I especially appreciated the nod to Ten-Forward and the touching tribute to Jadzia. Djinn has such a lovely way with these characters, and her affinity for them is apparent in her handling of them in this story.
-- Sara - Wed, 19 Mar 2003 21:51:17 -0500

7Data the Android by Paula Stiles
A great tribute to Data.

12Heard in Silence by Aura
The events on Kesprytt, no matter who's involved, always seem to give us great insight into the characters. Aura does a great job with this one, showing us a developing closeness betweeen Picard and Troi. Their common experience really shines in this one.

19One Friendship by monkee
A fantastic look at how the world of "First Contact" transformed into the precursor for what we see in the future. I love Lily's POV in this one. Also, the reappearance of Soval was just perfect.

19One Friendship by monkee
Monkee specializes in "fill in the blank" stories which are very satisfying in the way they do just that. This "First Contact" extension does a very nice job linking that TNG movie with both Enterprise and Voyager--a century or three down the road! Her chracters talk and act just like the Lily Sloane and Zef Cochrane we met in the movies, and Soval, well, he's Soval. I really appreciated the digs at his emotionalism. A very nice story, monkee, as always.

5Chance Encounter by Djinn
All right, I admit it -- I don't care for Deanna Troi. But I *do* like Djinn's stories, and this one is up to her usual standards. The characterization of Worf in particular works exceptionally well.
-- Kelly Chambliss - Sun, 23 Mar 2003 17:20:46 -0500

6Collateral Damage by Djinn
An excellent post-Nemesis story. I always love stories that examine the same event or person from different character's perspective. They really challenge a writer to find each speaker's voice. Djinn does a fine job with all the voices here.

19One Friendship by monkee
I liked both these characters in "First Contact" -- Lily and Cochran. I'm glad to see them again, and glad that the ever-interesting monkee is the author to have presented them.

3Blemishes by Lori
Now that's the movie *I* saw. I especially enjoyed the Anvil of Symbolism, the Mulder/Scully cameo, the filk, and the audience rooting for BatReman against Will.

5Chance Encounter by Djinn
This was a sad and revealing look at Worf.
-- Jemima - Sun, 23 Mar 2003 21:12:59 -0500

6Collateral Damage by Djinn
Djinn shows the damage from Nemesis in a more realistic light than is usual for Trek. She weaves the individual scenes and characters together marvelously; I especially liked Geordi's annoyance with B4 and the Search for Spot.
-- Jemima - Sun, 23 Mar 2003 21:14:09 -0500

8Drowning in a Strawberry Daiquiri by Sara Goose
I didn't guess which character it was, but he was a perfect choice.
-- Jemima - Sun, 23 Mar 2003 21:14:48 -0500

9Echoes and Voices by Djinn
I liked the way Djinn pulled B4 into Picard's inner monologue at the end to tie together the story's theme.
-- Jemima - Sun, 23 Mar 2003 21:15:18 -0500

19One Friendship by monkee
Despite the presence of the annoying, emotional Vulcans of ENT who prevent humans from entering space, this was a nice background story for that pesky probe.

24What I Did On My Risian Vacation by Rocky
The mystery has certainly been cleared up for me.
-- Jemima - Sun, 23 Mar 2003 21:16:44 -0500

5Chance Encounter by Djinn
It's a major failing of the Trek franchise that we never got to see Worf and Troi seriously interact with one another after their off-screen breakup. In this story, Troi does what her character was designed to do, and does it well.
-- Alara Rogers - Sun, 23 Mar 2003 21:23:07 -0500

6Collateral Damage by Djinn
"Nemesis" didn't do very well at showing us the aftermath-- aside from one scene people barely grieved for Data. This is one of the best answers to that problem that I've read. Everyone's reactions to the traumatic events, from Deanna reacting to her psychic rape to Geordi grieving for his best friend, are vivid.

9Echoes and Voices by Djinn
Wow. While I enjoyed Djinn's other follow-up fic to Nemesis, I have to confess this is the one that really compels me. Picard looks in the mirror and sees Shinzon, now, as well as Locutus. Can't the poor guy ever get to meet an alternate self who isn't evil? The language is haunting and also very much in character for Picard.

2A Feast I Don't Like In The Least by Rob Morris
Another of Rob's entertaining Christmas stories. Picard, with all his earnest pomposity, is just the right character to give an impassioned speech on the true meaning of the season.

8Drowning in a Strawberry Daiquiri by Sara Goose
An interesting perspective on Deanna as she appears to a fellow officer.

12Heard in Silence by Aura
I enjoyed this unusual twist on Deanna's experiences as an empath, where she gets the tables turned on her, so to speak.

19One Friendship by monkee
We don't see much of Zefram and Lily in fanfic, and monkee has done a nice job with them here. The image of Soval being forced to listen to "Wild Thing" cracked me up. An interesting speculation on the origins of the Friendship One probe -- all the different Trek series really come together here.

21Return From Risa by Kathy Walsh

24What I Did On My Risian Vacation by Rocky
Yup, we all knew Picard wasn't REALLY the boring, sexless old man he was behaving like at the beginning of that ep!
