This is the Digest from 2002 for the Category of: Picard / Crusher

11Habitual Choices by Seema
This is a fine coda to "Nemesis", particularly in light of what we're hearing about the scenes that were cut from the movie. I like how Beverly reached her decision to leave. Very typical of all the 'dancing around' the two of them have done over the years. Yes, she might have stayed if he'd asked her to outright, but of course she knew that he wouldn't.

27The Speed Of Sound by Kyra Cullinan
The title of this story intrigued me. The use of language and sound as a metaphor for communication between two individuals is very nicely done.

3Attack of the Killer Beans by zoinky
Hillarious! I loved this. Typical Zoinky at her best, and it also helps to have medication when writing P/C. Simply loved it. Great laugh!

21Not Good Not Good at All by Trexphile
This story has a great opening line. The author knows how to get the reader interested and keep them reading. I liked the way she gave us both Picard's and Crusher's reaction to the same dilema - a naked wedding.

11Habitual Choices by Seema
This was a beautifully written piece that perfectly captured and summed up a decade of canon and characterization. It made for a poignant coda to the movie. A truly enjoyable read.

This has to be one of my favorite P/C fics of all time. Trexphile has a light comedic touch that's evident throughout this fic. And I won't be forgetting Picard's "turkey neck" any time soon. Great job!

18Mending Fences by Sandi G -2002
Wow. This has got to be one of the best PicardCrusher stories I have read in a long, long time. Hard to believe this story was the authors first attempt. The charactors were written beautifully and very true to the series.I almost passed on reading it due to the nonconsensual sex issues, I will have to say that I am very glad I decieded to give it a go. While the subject matter deals with the rape of a main charactor, the story really deals with the recovery from that rape. The emotions and actions by the charactor are very realistic and one can't help but wonder how much of the author comes to light in Beverly's actions. While reading this story, I felt everything that Beverly did, the fear, the loss of control, the self pity.. I actually cried while reading, something I haven't done reading a PicardCrusher story in a very long time. I still can not believe this was the authors first attempt at fanfiction. I seriously hope that she has more stories in the works because I, for one, would love to read more!

11Habitual Choices by Seema
A good coda for Nemesis, with a nod to All Good Things, and faithful to the characters we know and love. Like the title.

21Not Good Not Good at All by Trexphile
BWA! Priceless. Hilarious. I laughed, I cried, I shared it with a friend. Gives a whole new dimension to that line in Nemesis where they're on the way to Betazed for the wedding and Picard goes off the bridge saying "I'll be in the gym."
-- Lori - Sun, 16 Mar 2003 12:50:57 -0500

21Not Good Not Good at All by Trexphile
A great story that had me laughing out loud through much of it. Hearing their thoughts throughout the preparations and the ceremony was priceless. Lovely to see such an original and hilarious story!

11Habitual Choices by Seema
I enjoyed this story when I first read it, and now that I've read it again, I find there's more to enjoy. I appreciated finding out what Wesley's up to. And I like how some aspects of their lives are shaping up to fall in line with what was shown in "All Good Things..." Beverly also has such a way of comforting him in his anxieties over Shinzon. And as much as I wish things could have worked out for her and Picard, some times, too much has happened and too many choices have been made.
-- Sara - Sun, 16 Mar 2003 13:12:00 -0500

10The Gift by Catherine Ellis
I liked all three stories by Catherine Ellis. They have interesting well constructed plots. The author has a sense of humour. Once I started reading one I always wanted to finish it. The endings didn’t disappoint. This ‘The Gift’ story is no exception. The sexual undertones bubble along nicely, culminating in the invitation to bed. I particularly liked the bit about Picard’s T-shirt.The Evans character was convincingly irritating. I could just picture Crusher rowing with him. The ’ Inner light’ link was unusual, most TNG writers just follow-up on Picard’s musical skills whereas this story found a new angle. This a good story even if you’re not a TNG fan.
-- djb - Sun, 16 Mar 2003 14:22:48 -0500

4Beverly's Subject by Catherine Ellis
This is another good and unusual plot from Catherine with some great comic moments. I haven’t come across many stories set on the Star Gazer so this made a welcome change. The evolution of Picard’s behaviour towards Beverly into something bordering on the inappropriate was well captured. So was his frustration and embarrassment caused by the monitoring device. The scene where Picard finds himself trapped into giving Jack Crusher marital advice was well done.Good story, great last line.
-- djb - Sun, 16 Mar 2003 14:24:04 -0500

25Something to Confess by Catherine Ellis
Yet another good plot from this author, this time an alternative ending to the episode ‘Chain of Command’. The emotional temperature is high here, but not ridiculously so considering what has happened to Picard. There were lots of good twists along the way and the last scene a dramatic surprise. Besides the main Picard / Crusher scenes there were also episodes with Troi and Riker that convincingly capture his friendship with these two.The erotic part is quite steamy with another good twist.
-- djb - Sun, 16 Mar 2003 14:25:03 -0500

7Dvorovoi by Karen Page
This story is probably one of the best I have read in a long while. I thought it was going to be another story just like the episode SubRosa, but the author made it so much more and it is very different on most parts. She introduced another character called Bailey, who is a distant relative of Beverly's. She is not the common marysue of most fan fics, but a character in her own rights. She was brilliant! The story had me on the edge of my seat and I couldn't stop reading it. I sat and read it whilst at work and didn't get ANY work done! I paid for that the rest of the week, but it was worth it!You have to read this story if you haven't already done so! Its a must read!

7Dvorovoi by Karen Page
This is absolutely by far one of the best stories I've read by Karen. The story is definitely different from your mainstream P/C story, but it stays true to the characters. It's exciting, and the story is absolutely brilliant. It is a fresh idea, one that I truly loved and enjoyed reading. Karen has a great grasp on the characters and how they may react in certain situations. I can't wait to read the sequel!

18Mending Fences by Sandi G -2002
An absolute wonderful read. Sandi has amazed me with this first attempt at writing. It is so well done it seems like this story is more from an experienced writer rather than a first timer. The characters are true to form, and the detailed descriptions in the story make you feel like your actually in the story itself. The story also grabbed me emotionally. This story is by far one of the best I've read in a long time. I can't wait to read more from Sandi!

18Mending Fences by Sandi G -2002
It has been a very long time since I have thoroughly enjoyed a Picard Crusher story as much as I have enjoyed this one. Mending Fences is an extraordinarily well-written piece of inspired wonder. The author managed to run through the whole gambit of feelings masterfully, bringing to light, a side of the formidable Doctor Crusher we were rarely shown. While Beverly showed astounding strength while being attacked, it was the sections of the story detailing her overcoming her attack that totally blow the reader away. Don’t get me wrong, the detail used to describe the rape were very realistic and, quite frankly, more than a little disturbing, but the emotions after the rape are so powerful, so beautifully written that I find it hard to believe that this story is the author’s first attempt at fan fiction. The detail and care paid to all the characters mentioned in Mending Fences, proves to me that this new writer has an exceptionally well-placed hand on these characters. By and large, one of the best Picard and Crusher stories written in at least a few years! Great Read!

11Habitual Choices by Seema
This is a wonderful post-Nemesis story. From the very first paragraph, the reader is given a very clear portrayal of Beverly that rings very true and picks up on the theme suggested by the title. Seema evokes Picard very strongly from the start as well in a thing as small as his habit of tugging on his clothing. A rather apt choice to call up his character given this story. I very much like how Seema picked up on and wove in the events of the movie as well as events from one of the best of TNG episodes. I liked for instance how the character of Wesley figured in Seema's story. I loved the conversation Beverly and Picard had over the events of the movie and how it affected how he viewed himself. There are so many lines to savor here, small little insights into familiar characters that make you go aha, of course, except you never thought of them yourself until Seema show you. "Habitual Choices" is, as I said at the beginning, a simply wonderful story.
-- Rabble Rouser - Mon, 17 Mar 2003 03:33:59 -0500

12Illusions by Louise Ellis
I liked this AU of young Bev Howard and Picard. I liked the variations, parallels and mirroring of canon. The story had more than one twist and a solid plot. I enjoyed the appearance of such figures as Dalen Quaice and Kate Pulaski. Nicely romantic without being too sugary sweet.
-- Rabble Rouser - Mon, 17 Mar 2003 03:34:51 -0500

13Kennewick by Zoinky
This story had an interesting premise and built its prehistoric world well.

14La Belle Dame Sans Regrets by Temporal Rift
This was lyrical, deft writing. A very good Picard/Crusher story even for a non-fan of the pairing like myself. I like how Temporal Rift described how Crusher led Picard in the dance both literally and metaphorically while making it appear that he was in that position. There's a lot economically packed into the space of this short-short that grabbed my attention from the beginning and never let go until the end. One thing that strikes me is how good the author is at evoking Picard's voice. Unlike many who pair him romantically Temporal Rift doesn’t make him overly sentimental or romantic but lets him keep his reserve and dry wit, and I like how she writes Beverly as well. The author writes them both very well, separately and as a couple. I loved how the author described them as "opposite, the two of us, and yet so alike, as the antonyms share the bond of their distinctiveness." As I said, lovely writing, and done with the grace of an author not afraid to let her characters be who they are. Well done.

15A Little Decadence by Louise Ellis

21Not Good Not Good at All by Trexphile
"Not Good, Not Good At All" was a very fun story as well as a pleasure to read throughout with more than one laugh-out-loud moment. Picard's reaction to being told of a certain custom and that both he and Beverly would need to participate was priceless. (In fact, I could not help but think of this story when I saw "Nemesis." Remember when Worf is complaining about Betazoid tradition and Picard tells him he shouldn't worry--and then says "I'll be in the gym." LOL) And Beverly's babbling reaction was pretty fun too And her moments before the mirror. Well, I could empathize with their reaction--and the remedy. It was lovely to read a TNG piece with a good sense of humor and the electric awareness between Picard and Crusher is very well conveyed by the shifting perspectives. The ceremony itself is hilarious. I particularly liked the scene between Picard and Crusher after the ceremony. There is a nice moment when they were discussing yet another tradition when Picard makes an admission to her. Trexphile treds the line well between the two--romantic, but not cloyingly, sugary sweet. Trexphile certainly makes me feel fully that Picard and Crusher fears that this is "not good, not good at all" but the story itself is very good, very good indeed.

25Something to Confess by Catherine Ellis
Interesting story of Picard coping with his experience with Gul Madred. I thought the author was good at showing Picard's vulnerability. I love Picard's satisfaction when he starts to recover and finds he can still make crewmember's jump--that he's not a toothless cat.

27The Speed Of Sound by Kyra Cullinan
"The Speed of Sound" is a lovely, lyrical story. One of the best Picard/Crusher stories I've read this year. It's very short and very single word counts. It's a story about language itself, his, hers, and what is lost in the translation. I like how this story speaks of the different uses and limitations of language and what it says about the relationship between Picard and Crusher and all the parts of it unspoken. I like the references to Beverly's past loves (not simply the romantic ones) and the way she communicated with them including lullabies to Wesley. I like how the unfinished between them is likened to Beverly not finishing her sentences. The last sentence sums up all that has gone before while tying in beautifully into the title. It is a pleasure to read such and intelligent and stylish piece that makes you think as well as feel.

Ahhhh! What can I say?I've read so many stories about the anniversary of Jack's death. But none of them have been filled with this much tenderness, gentleness. It truly is beautiful. And a wonderful way to put the ghost of Jack away from between Jean-Luc and Beverly.

11Habitual Choices by Seema
Picard/Crusher is a strong category this year with the offerings of some very talented authors and one of the best stories in that category is Seema's latest TNG offering, Habitual Choices -- a poignantly lovely P/C story and very effective Nemesis afterward. Seema has captured the sometimes sexy, most of the time loving but almost always hapless dynamic between Jean-Luc Picard and Beverly Crusher and given us a sad look into their possible future. I was a big Picard/Crusher booster back in the day, but they really did seem masters of being in two different places emotionally most of the time despite the wistful dynamic between them. This story shows how scary it can be when you realize that you have to move on, move away and let something go. This is a wonderful coda to Nemesis. Seema completely nails the voices and personalities here and gives us a satisfying if bittersweet final scene. Well done, Seema. Well done!

15A Little Decadence by Louise Ellis

21Not Good Not Good at All by Trexphile
Bwa ha ha ha!! When I think Picard/Crusher stories, I do not immediately associate that pairing with really wild humor. But Not Good, Not Good at All is a wonderfully hilarious and yet still romantic romp through the preparations for a naked Betazoid wedding. The concept all by its lonesome pretty much ratchets up the humor potential but Trexphile really pulls out all the stops in this story. And I couldn't help but feel much of the uncertainty and anticipation that Picard and Crusher did as they got ready for the actual ceremony. And what happens at that ceremony, well that's when it gets truly hilarious. It's laugh out loud fun time! The playful dialogue, the nasty goings on, the overwhelming ummm nakedness. LOL! Just great! I'd quote my favorite parts if I didn't think it would spoil the fun for others. And I'd hate to do that because this was one fun read! Thank you for the laughter and the "awwww" smiles.
-- Djinn - Mon, 17 Mar 2003 21:15:38 -0500

14La Belle Dame Sans Regrets by Temporal Rift
La Belle Dame Sans Regrets is a truly enchanting story. Bittersweet and lyrical and graceful in the way the words flow into each other, as if the reader has just taken a turn around the dance floor with Beverly Crusher and Jean Luc Picard. Temporal Rift has loaded an awful lot of sentiment into this short tale. And it's powerful stuff. I love the Jean-Luc Picard that is drawn for us here. Strong and regretful, with the ironic insight I'd expect him to have. I almost passed this one by and I'm so glad that I took the time to read it because it is an incredibly beautiful story! Hope we see more TNG stories from Temporal Rift next year!
-- Djinn - Mon, 17 Mar 2003 21:16:11 -0500

27The Speed Of Sound by Kyra Cullinan
Lovely and lyrical and quite sad, Kyra Cullinan's The Speed of Sound is a bittersweet look at the Picard/Crusher dynamic and an intriguing examination of Beverly's character. Very short, very much to the point. I am so impressed with Kyra Cullinan's talent and can't wait to see her next offering. Well done!

21Not Good Not Good at All by Trexphile
This piece is so...visual. Jean Luc's neck. Beverly's belly and "titties." Two male butts (one, I suspect, much firmer than the other). Genital guard duty (Boy, you don't get much more "visual" than that!). I always enjoyed the references to the Betazoid wedding ceremony, which was probably a throwaway concept, but it was really fun to see it described so well so that it seemed like it could actually happen. Given Lwaxana's proclivities, it's easy to see how this might actually work! And this story works very well, too. I've really always loved R/T, but this story makes it easy to appreciate P/C as well. Very nicely done--except for the title. It's not truth in advertising; this story is certainly very good indeed.

11Habitual Choices by Seema
I ran across this story of Seema's after seeing "Nemesis." I enjoyed the movie (mainly because they finally did right by Will and Deanna) but there were several unresolved threads. Seema has tied them up beautifully in this fic. Why has Bev remained on board Enterprise all this time, even after the events of "Insurrection"? If there had been anything between Picard and Crusher before (and "Attached" and "All Good Things..." certainly suggest the emotions were present, even if not acted upon), it was pretty clear after Anij that it wasn't likely anything was going to happen between them. This fic perfectly captures the wistful aftermath, and lets us see a Beverly who has finally bowed to the inevitable and chosen to go on with her life. Lovely.

Seema sets the reader up for the usual P/C (or J/C, or pick your pairing) reconciliation, where everyone confesses their twue love and wanders off into the sunset. Then she pulls the rug out from under the reader, making for an effective story and a very believable Beverly Crusher.

This story is brilliant! It's a total whole new story and something that has never been covered before. I have thoroughly enjoyed all of the stories this author has written and they just keep on getting better and better. Dvorovoi is the lastest addition to Karen's credits, and probably the best! It's certainly the best I have read this year, and for a long while.I love the fact that she introduces new characters that aren't just names on faces, they always have wonderful personalities and interesting histories. Bailey Howard is no exception. I loved the character and wish to see her used more. The author has real talent and takes the reader into her world with the words she spins. I couldn't put it down and read the 200+ pages in one sitting. I want more!

27The Speed Of Sound by Kyra Cullinan
This story is stunning and such amazing images. I feel like I can almost reach out and touch what it describes. Kyra does a great job at getting tangled in the complexities of this relationship without getting lost.

10The Gift by Catherine Ellis
I like this story because it contains a mystery which makes you want to keep reading until all is revealed at the end.The Picard character is very true to life as he would not make a big show of his efforts to create a gift for Beverly.Overall one of my favourite P/C stories.

3Attack of the Killer Beans by zoinky
Hahaha! The Quark/Veggie coding was worth the price of admission in itself! Zoinky, you should take medication more often, you know that? Hahaha!

21Not Good Not Good at All by Trexphile
Wonderful humor and romance as Picard and Crusher get the jitters when they contemplate the embarrassing prospect of baring all -- especially in front of each other -- at Riker and Troi's Betazoid wedding. Hee! Loved it!
