Hayes -- in death, I find myself finally understanding him, and wishing I had
more time to know him better. He was an honorable man, who felt just as
responsible for safeguarding the lives of this crew as I do. His self
sacrifice, to save Hoshi, will not be forgotten.

I must admit, however, that I feared resentment from his team when I brought
them the news of his death; I needn't have worried. No accusations; no anger;
no questions. When I asked for volunteers, not a single one held back.
Commendable and honorable, to the last. Hayes would be proud.
