Email Feedback is most welcome. janeway.voyager@ntlworld.com 'I still can't quite believe it Belanna' said Katherine relaxing on the sofa having just enjoyed one of Belanna's delicious home cooked meals. 'It's just wonderful to see you so happy Katherine. You're glowing!' Belanna replied with a sincere smile. 'Is it that obvious?' she said feigning a distraught face then took on a serious tone. 'When we returned from the Delta Quadrant, I always hoped I would find someone but it just didn't happen. I buried myself in my work.....and I had my friends.....' She leant over and touched Belanna's hand 'I was content......but then this bolt of lightening called Lisa Ross sweeps into my life! I never thought I could be so happy Belanna' 'And now here you are six months later.......how's the new apartment coming along?' 'Slowly!' said Katherine throwing up her hands in mock disdain. 'Lisa hates my taste in furnishings and she drives me insane with her untidiness......how she ever finds anything I don't know!' 'It sounds like a match made in heaven to me' laughed Belanna Katherine smiled, her eyes alight with contentment. 'So......what has Star Fleet in store for our illustrious Captain now that your present posting is nearly over?' Katherine sat up in her seat and took on the well known persona that was all business - it was not missed by Belanna. 'Why do I get the feeling I'm going to be involved somehow?' she said warily 'This is strictly a volunteer mission Lieutenant!' then smiled a knowing smile. 'Belanna, Star Fleet have asked me to head a brand new project' she said, with obvious excitement in her voice. 'They want to develop the warp engines for the new breed of Galaxy Class Star Ships but that's not all. They want to explore the possibilities of incorporating a phase induced cloak that can work without the need for de-cloaking every time we need transporters or weapons' 'But that's never been done' 'Care to be the first to do it?' Katherine chuckled at Belanna's open mouthed expression. 'Star Fleet want you as their Chief Engineer. You'd have your own department and free reign and the best experts Star Fleet can muster. What do you say Belanna? Katherine paused then added 'We always did make a great team' 'We did didn't we?' Belanna looked at her friend and smiled. 'I think the teams been apart too long? When do we start?' Katherine was overjoyed and hugged her friend who returned the embrace warmly and they settled down with a large pot of strong coffee to discuss the new exciting project' 'Have you told Lisa yet?' 'No, she's been away for a few days on Mars covering the festival there, I intend to tell her tonight. She'd never say anything to me but I know she's been worried about my next posting. She'll be thrilled I'm staying on Earth. After what happened with Kayla, it's important she has some security and I want her to know how committed I am to our life together' Belanna looked fondly at Katherine. 'I know you are' she said simply. ******************** 'Katherine that's BRILLIANT!!!' shrieked Lisa 'Let's celebrate!!' Katherine was delighted and not a little moved by Lisa's reaction as she saw the relief in her eyes. She walked her across to the sofa, smiling to herself as she had to remove two of her partner's jumpers before they could sit down. She took her hand in hers and looked into her eyes. 'My darling.....I want you to know how much you mean to me and as you've realised, this new posting will mean I will be staying on Earth for the foreseeable future. It's an exciting project yes, but I wanted us to be together and I need you to know I am committed to that future' Lisa could feel tears welling up in her eyes and she simply held on to her lover, whispering in her ear, 'Thank you Katherine' ********************** 'Captain, this is intolerable!' Belanna remarked whilst dodging another group of cadets carrying a very delicate piece of equipment. 'Why can't Star Fleet get the logistics right? We've had to store most of this equipment because they still haven't sent over the Phase Analyser I ordered two weeks ago and that needs to be installed first!' Katherine smiled a characteristic smile and lent over to Belanna and whispered in her ear. 'You're enjoying this and don't you tell me any different' 'Ha!' she commented unable to hide a slight smile 'It just would be must easier if the Quartermaster actually read the requisitions instead of sending over in what order he thinks we need this stuff!' 'I'm sure you will have it all ship shape in no time Belanna' said Katherine trying to pacify but still unable to hide her amusement. ' Now, how is the staff situation? I still haven't seen the full crew manifest' 'The last of them is due to arrive at 1400 hours this afternoon so if it's OK with you Captain, I'll schedule a meeting of all the staff straight after she arrives - then maybe we can get down to some serious work instead of......WILL YOU BE CAREFUL WITH THAT !' shouted Belanna seeing two more Cadets struggling with a very heavy crate. 'I'm out of here Belanna, let me know when the staff meeting is and I'll see you there' Katherine didn't wait for a reply and strode out to the sound of Belanna's raised voice still unable to hide a wry smile. ******************* 'And to conclude - and I'm sure you'll all be happy to hear that word' a murmur of laughter went around the room as Katherine continued 'We are embarking on a ground breaking project that's going to take dedication and aptitude on your part but you are Star Fleet's finest in your chosen fields of expertise and I have no doubt you are up to the task. Now please help yourself to refreshments. This is an informal 'First Contact' situation and I'd like to get to know you all.' Katherine stepped down from the podium to enthusiastic applause then conversation filled the room as the assembled staff started to mingle. 'Captain, there's something I need to tell you....urgently!' said Belanna taking Katherine aside. 'It's about.....' 'Katherine!' bellowed Admiral Parker walking steadfastly toward her. 'Marvellous speech. A rallying cry to the troops! Now let me introduce you to the woman I recommended to this project.' He said ushering her along. 'She arrived just a few minutes ago - she's been hiding away on a project on Janus7. Been quite a journey for her' 'Of course Admiral' She said then turned to Belanna. 'I'll see you shortly Commander' and shot her a beseeching look. Katherine duly followed the Admiral who soon found his protégé. 'Captain, I'd like you to meet the woman who single-handed solved the Janus 7 defence cloak problem.' 'Hardly single handed Admiral' she said a little embarrassed. 'That's quite a feat by anyone's standards' Katherine said warming shaking hands with her. 'I look forward to hearing all about it.' 'Where are my manners!' interrupted the Admiral. 'I haven't formally introduced you. Captain Janeway, this is Lieutenant Commander Kayla Petersen.' ******************** 'You're quiet Katherine' remarked Lisa as she laid her head on her partners lap and stretched out on the sofa. Katherine lovingly stroked her hair. 'I'm sorry - it's been a long day and........and there's something I need to tell you......' The pause and tone made Lisa sit up, alarm and concern on her face. 'Are you OK? What is it Katherine? Tell me' Katherine looked into her eyes and saw such distress she just couldn't tell her the truth....not now....not after such a lovely night. She'd arrived home to find Lisa had prepared her favourite meal and she'd sat and listened with joy to her relate all of the days news. She loved these times and was touched that Lisa had seen how stressed she was and had led her to the bedroom to make slow and sensuous love to her. Soon.......she would tell her soon enough. 'It's nothing for you to worry about Lisa. It's only the reception date. It's been set for a week on Saturday night. We're having an official opening for the new project. I'm sure it would bore you rigid....all Star Fleet pips and stars and dull admirals.' 'Phew....you had me worried there' she replied, then put on a sultry voice 'Will you be wearing your dress uniform? You know what that does to me don't you?' 'Lisa....wouldn't you rather.......' 'Damn! I completely forgot! This morning I agreed to cover the interplanetary convention in Dallas. I'm sorry Katherine, I would try to get out of it but Philip asked me as a special favour as he's short of a journalist those two days so there's no-one else I can ask to cover for me - and I do owe him don't I?' she added with a resigned expression. 'Yes you do my darling, we both do. You'd find it wearisome I'm sure and I'll have to play host so we wouldn't have much time together. They'll be plenty more functions my love so don't give it another thought.' Katherine pulled Lisa to her grateful for her not to be able to see her face lest she looked as terrible as she felt. ****************** Lisa barely made it to the shuttle in time but as she sat back in her seat exhausted, was duly satisfied that having worked practically all through the night, she would just about make the reception. She hadn't mentioned it to Katherine for fear that she wouldn't have finished in time, but she wanted so much to show her support. A few minutes later the shuttle arrived at the transporter site and having hurriedly changed before leaving, was all ready when the order came to energise. She re-materialised in the reception area to the sound of applause and the chinking of glasses, a little disappointed she had obviously missed the beginning but glad all the same that she could be there. She walked into the room intent on finding her partner. Lisa picked up a glass of champagne from the tray of a passing waiter A couple of the staff nodded and raised their glasses to acknowledge her as she walked through the large bedecked room. 'Wow' she thought to herself, they've pushed the boat out for this and Katherine was right...... all pips and admirals' At last she spotted Katherine over the other side of the room. Even from that distance she could see she needed rescuing and started walking toward her. At the very instance she saw the shocked look on Katherine's face, she felt a light hand on her shoulder and froze as a familiar voice uttered. 'Hello Lisa' Katherine rushed over to her and as Lisa turned to face Kayla, shock and disbelief on her face, she heard Katherine saying that she was sorry and that why didn't she come outside but her words barely registered. 'What are you doing here?' she said to Kayla still not quite trusting this wasn't a dream' She felt Katherine's hand on her arm urging her to go but it was as if all the room were silent and she could only focus on this one person, needing to know the answer. 'Oh, of course, why would you know' said Kayla, totally unaware of the situation 'I've been on the staff here since the project began.........' Lisa didn't hear anymore. She didn't want to hear anymore. All she could do was run. Run from Kayla, run from Star Fleet and most of all run from the utter despair she felt that Katherine had let this happen. Katherine had deceived her. Katherine had allowed her find out in this awful way. Katherine, the woman who she thought loved and cared for her had put Star Fleet and this bloody project before her and with the one woman in the galaxy that three years before had done the very same. ****************** 'I've tried everyone I know but I can't find her Belanna. Where is she?' said Katherine pacing round her office like a caged tiger. 'Katherine....' Belanna replied concerned 'She obviously doesn't want to be found. You have to give her some time to sort this all out' Katherine threw up her hands in despair. 'It's been three days. I'm going out of my mind with worry. This is all my fault. Why the hell didn't I just tell her or better still, tell Kayla Petersen that she couldn't join the staff!' 'But you didn't know she was joining the staff remember? She was the Admiral's little project' 'But when I knew, I could have prevented this from ever happening.' 'No you couldn't Katherine. What could you have done? Said to the Admiral that she can't be on the staff as she's your lovers ex-girlfriend?' 'I could have taken up another post......hell, I could have resigned from Star Fleet!' Katherine slumped in a chair next to her friend, her manner defeated and her voice now barely a whisper. 'I just didn't want to hurt her Belanna. I knew how much Kayla had hurt her and I never wanted her to go through that again and all I've done is....... ' she paused with tears welling up in her eyes. 'I was going to tell her when the reception was over. If I'd have had any idea she would turn up like that......We had planned to go away for a few days. Things have been so busy around here that we've hardly had much time together and I thought that I could break the news then. I would have done anything she asked to make this workable.......anything' Belanna took Katherine's hand trying to send some assurance through the touch. 'You have such a precious relationship with Lisa, this is not the end Katherine. I've seen you together and whilst I don't deny that what has happened is going to take some working out, in the end, it will be' 'I wish I shared your optimism Belanna' ***************** Two days later, Katherine sat in her office staring at the computer screen. She had accessed the personnel files of the staff and as the home address of Lieutenant Commander Kayla Petersen appeared before her, she stood up purposefully and strode out of her office. Katherine wasn't sure what purpose her actions would serve but having spent practically a week and still no nearer finding Lisa, she couldn't just sit and wait anymore. Perhaps Kayla would have some idea where she might have gone - a bolt hole that she hadn't mentioned to Katherine, a friend from the past she might be staying with. It was a long shot but she was out of options. The district wasn't hard to find but as night was approaching she was glad, as she walked around the corner, to see the house. There was a light on so at least someone is in she mused. Pressing the comm at the entrance elicited no response so she walked around to the lighted window but recoiled as she saw that Kayla had company. Feeling more like a voyeur than a Star Fleet Captain but unable to stop herself, she hid behind some foliage and watched. Whoever was with Kayla had their back to Katherine as she could just see their head above the back of the sofa they were sitting on. Kayla was talking and walking about the room but she couldn't hear what she was saying. This is ridiculous, she thought to herself and was about to go when she saw Kayla stand in the middle of the room with her arms outstretched as if beckoning the person to her. Katherine froze as she saw the familiar figure of Lisa stand, walk over to Kayla and take her hands - and then watched in horror as the two passionately embraced and began to intimately dance. Katherine was still in shock as she quietly let herself into her own apartment and as the door closed behind her, she leant heavily upon it, slowly lowered herself to the floor and wept. ****************** Belanna did all she could to cover for her Captain. She held the fort citing anything from illness to leave to meetings with fictional staff but eventually the time came that she could hide Katherine's absence no longer and decided on direct action. She sat behind her desk and called 'Come in' when the door comm sounded. 'Lieutenant, please sit down.' Kayla Petersen duly sat in the chair opposite and waited for Belanna to speak. As usual, she came straight to the point. 'I need to know the whereabouts of Lisa Ross' 'Lisa?' Kayla replied, a quizzical look on her face' 'What makes you think I can contact her?' 'Don't play the innocent Lieutenant. I don't have the time. I know about your relationship with her. Look' said Belanna trying to make this as easy as possible 'I have no interest in your private life but I need to know where I can find her and I need to know now.' 'I have no idea why you need to get hold of her so urgently and if I knew where she was then I would tell you, but our relationship finished a long time ago. I saw her for the first time in over three years at the reception and I haven't seen her since' 'Then why was she in your apartment three nights ago?' 'How the hell?......' Kayla sat, a look of utter shock and disbelief of her face. Belanna eyed her warily, folded her arms and waited for her answer. 'I'm sorry Commander but I can't help you.' 'What!' Belanna sat back amazed at the woman's reply. 'Do you deny she was at your apartment? Kayla moved uneasily in her seat obviously weighing up her reply. 'I am neither admitting or denying it but I know that my private life is my own and not Star Fleet's and that you can't order me to answer you' The two women sat staring at each other but Belanna had to admit to herself that Kayla was right - this wasn't Star Fleet business and she was not going to find her answer even if she did issue an order. 'Dismissed' was all Belanna could utter. ***************** It was the first time in Katherine Janeway's adult life that she was unable to fix the problem. No amount of hard work, or scientific knowledge would resolve the crisis, her rank counted for nothing, she couldn't delegate, fire a photon torpedo or launch a probe for more information.......she was alone and bereft, and as she sat in their apartment with the lights very low, surrounded by the objects and memories of their life together, she was enveloped by utter helplessness, impotence and deep despair. She'd had relationship problems before but nothing like this - she'd never loved anyone as much as Lisa and never felt so desolate that the relationship was over. 'It's like a bereavement' she said to herself. 'How the hell did I let this happen! Why didn't you just tell her Katherine and together you could have sorted all this out......but now it's too late. She's gone back to Kayla......Why Lisa? I know I was wrong but how could you go back to that woman......unless you never stopped loving her. Katherine sat up as the thought permeated her mind and realisation dawned. Face it Katherine, you know Lisa and she wouldn't do this just to get back at you......she's done this because she never fell out of love with Kayla and the sad irony is, you made it happen. Her reverie was interrupted by a sound of the door closing. She stood up quickly and called for the lights to see the figure of Lisa standing before her. Somehow it was no surprise that she was there after all this time. It was as though fate had it's hand in Lisa choosing this moment to come home and was making them play out the final act of some old tragic play. Katherine wanted nothing more than to run into her arms and forget everything that had gone before but how could she? Lisa, the love of her life, was lost through her own misguided actions, to another woman and to a love that she couldn't compete with. She wouldn't beg or evoke pity but as she stood there before Lisa, Katherine realised she would have done all of those and more had she thought for one moment that it would bring Lisa back to her willingly. Katherine, her voice barely audible, mumbled a short hello then caught her voice, and stood proud. 'I suppose you've come for your things?' . 'My things? Lisa said incredulously 'Actually, I ..........' 'Well there's no need for you to move out Lisa, ' Katherine interrupted 'I will. I'm sorry it's come to this but at least I hope we can be civil' 'Civil? Katherine, what on earth are you talking about? Lisa stood aghast not believing that Katherine could be acting like this '.......and shouldn't it be me that perhaps is owed an apology? I was the one that had to see Kayla at the reception...' she paused trying desperately to not to lose her temper. '.......Katherine, I've been.......' 'I know' said Katherine flatly. 'Know? Know what Katherine?' Lisa replied still perplexed. 'I know about you and Kayla? 'What about me and Kayla?' 'Please Lisa, at least be honest with me. I know you've been seeing her and in all probability have slept together.....' 'WHAT!!!!' Lisa shouted in disbelief. 'Katherine, I don't know what someone has been saying but.......' Katherine, wounded with hurt and despair that after all they'd been through, Lisa could stand before her and deny everything.......and even deny her this last moment together. She grabbed her jacket from the sofa and strode to the door then turned, and with tears streaming down her face, screamed her parting words. 'I saw the two of you together Lisa. At her apartment. And it was obvious you weren't there to talk!' Lisa stood, shocked and bewildered staring at a very closed door. ********************* Belanna Torres was on a mission. Lisa had contacted her that morning and relayed the previous night's events. Not long after, Katherine, sounding utterly distressed, had called her to say that she wouldn't be at work for at least a few days and that she and Lisa were no longer together. And to add to the mystery, Belanna was looking at a very curious message on the computer screen. She didn't need to be a detective to tell someone......or something was really wrong. It just didn't add up and she intended to find out why. *********************** Three days later, Belanna stood at the entrance to Katherine's temporary quarters at Star Fleet Headquarters. She took a deep breath and pressed the comm. 'Katherine, how are you?' Shocked at her Captain's appearance as she greeted her, Belanna quietly walked in and sat on the sofa. 'I'm fine Belanna.' 'You look anything but fine Katherine. I'm here to.....' Her sentence was cut short as the comm again sounded. Katherine didn't seem to acknowledge it so Belanna answered the door. Lisa stood, bewilderment on her face as she was confronted by the half-Klingon. 'Lisa, come in please.' 'You sound as if you were expecting me?' 'You could say that. I sent the message for you to be here' Katherine looked equally bewildered when she entered and they both starred questioningly at Belanna, perplexity on their faces but also faint hope in their eyes. Belanna stood to address them. 'Forgive me for the deception but I think you will agree that it was necessary to get the two of you together' Katherine stood ready to challenge her. 'Belanna....' She began, but the reply was swift and staying. 'Katherine.......please sit down and just listen' Katherine duly complied, shocked momentarily at the tone but Belanna was in no mood to argue or be swayed. I have known you for a long time Katherine, and since you've met Lisa, I've never seen you happier.' The two women before her put their heads down lest they show how much the words hurt. Undeterred she went on. 'I just couldn't believe that your relationship was over and that Lisa was back with Kayla. 'WHAT! But that's .......' Lisa shouted. 'Please Lisa.......Katherine.....just hear me out.' Belanna stayed them. 'Things just haven't been adding up around here. The two of you are obviously in love so why would Lisa go back to Kayla. Not a new thing in the history of relationships I know, but I wasn't convinced that things had happened this way. Three days ago, I received a message from Admiral Parker.......remember him? He was the one that recommended Kayla for the post on the project and was the cause of all this. Lisa....' She said turning to her. 'Katherine didn't know Kayla was being assigned to the project. She was presented with a fait accompli. Yes, she should have told you as soon as she knew and she had planned to after the reception, only you decided to surprise her and that's when you found out the wrong way.' Lisa, unable, and somewhat scared to interrupt Belanna just looked across and caught the eyes of her lover. Katherine returned the glance momentarily but turned back to Belanna silently urging her to continue. 'As I was saying.... Admiral Parker sent me a direct message that Kayla Petersen was being withdrawn from the project and would be returning forthwith to Janus 7. I thought that odd after you Katherine, had seen Lisa with her, and by your account, together again in her apartment. Why would Kayla just leave like that? I'd confronted her with the fact that the Captain had seen them together in their apartment but she was strangely non-committal and very defensive - and now I know why' Belanna reached for her tricorder, pressed a few buttons and then handed it to Katherine. 'I took these readings from the lounge where you saw Kayla and Lisa together. I have the evidence to back all this up but I think you will agree that this is pretty conclusive.' Katherine sank back in her seat, the tricorder falling from her hands as the truth and realisation hit her. With a shocked expression she just looked at Belanna and then at Lisa who by now was totally lost by it all. 'What is it? Will someone PLEASE tell me what the hell is going on!?' Katherine stood and walked over to Lisa, her manner subdued and her eyes close to tears. 'This means my love, that I have made a terrible mistake and for that, I hope with all my heart you will forgive me. The Lisa I saw with Kayla was a hologram........' ***************** Belanna spent the next half hour or so explaining in more detail the circumstances of what had happened that caused the two of them to split up, citing the coincidences, the misunderstandings the evidence found at Kayla Petersen's apartment and the utter frustration she felt at them both that they should have let this happen. As she relayed it all, Katherine and Lisa sat passively in their seats feeling like chastised children yet knowing that they had in fact, behaved rather unlike the professional adults they were. As Belanna got ready to go, they looked across at each other and both weakly smiled trying to relay the message that everything was going to be all right. As the door closed on Belanna, Katherine walked over to Lisa looked into her eyes then just put her arms around her and held her. Lisa, feeling now that nothing mattered other than this moment, returned the embrace and the two women held on to each other neither ever wanting to let go, and shed tears of sadness, joy and utter relief. Lisa was the first to speak. As she held on to her lover she whispered simply 'Let's go home' ******************* Over the next few of days, she and Lisa did nothing but talk and spend the nights wrapped in each others arms fearful to let go. Both finally and totally faced up to the past. Lisa told her everything about her relationship with Kayla Petersen, how after Kayla had left, she had an almost total break-down. About her resultant loss of confidence, and a deeply seated sense of insecurity, hence her reaction to Star Fleet and missing all the signals when Katherine was flirting with her - which they smiled about now. Why she felt she had to leave Katherine after they had shared their first night together and why she still found it so hard to believe Katherine could truly love her and wouldn't walk out. Katherine bared her soul to Lisa also. She related her time in the Delta Quadrant. How lonely she'd really felt, how Mark had abandoned her and how strong she'd had to be for the crew that left her no time for herself, for love, for living.......and for the very first time, she grieved for the seven years of her life she lost in space. Lisa held her as she wept and she really understood for the first time how Katherine had been emotionally scarred just as much as her. She understood why she hesitated telling her about Kayla and she even understood how Katherine could think she still loved Kayla. They shared an emotional empathy and after so much heartache and pain both realised that they were closer for it and their love deeper than ever. They had both talked openly and honestly about Katherine remaining in Star Fleet. Katherine had made it very clear that her relationship with Lisa came first. Above Star Fleet, above everything and that she was prepared to resign her commission but Lisa, now realised that Star Fleet was not a threat and never had been. Kayla had chosen Star Fleet instead of her but that was because their relationship wasn't strong enough, Kayla wasn't strong enough to have made the other choice. On the third night as they lay together talking, Katherine reached out to Lisa and for the first time since the fated reception, tentatively made love. It wasn't charged with passion like most of their previous love-making but was slow, loving and sensuous, each needing to show the other how much they were loved and needed and cherished. It somehow sealed their reunion and freed them from the emotions of hurt both had so deeply felt. Lisa gained a fresh perspective. Her confidence was returning and for the first time in many years, she felt loved, and secure within that love. She had thought about contacting Kayla......not for any reason other than to let her know that she didn't need a hologram because she had a real person to love. But all she felt was sorry for her rather than wanting any revenge and realised that Katherine had given her the love and confidence to go beyond such gestures. She hoped she would never see her again. Katherine knew she ought to be back at work but she didn't worry....Lisa was her priority and these past few days had seen them begin to heal, grow ever closer and start to enjoy each other again. She realised that both of them needed to be together and Star Fleet would have to wait. After confronting her deepest feelings from being stranded in the Delta Quadrant, she recognised that she'd never taken the time or allowed herself to do much more than exist in the six years since returning to Earth. She'd used her work and her deep sense of responsibility to hide behind and now this was a time for her to discover living again. In Lisa she had found the love, companionship the happiness and the soul mate she had always longed for.....and had finally come back to life.
