By: Louise Ellis "No," Beverly eased herself up on the bed, swinging her legs slowly as she waited. "I'll just get her lecture on the proper way a doctor should behave, you're a captain, I'm sure you've heard it yourself a time or two, in regards to problem patient's and captain's and their behaviors in remaining uninjured." "A time or two." Kathryn settled back, laughing as Kate returned. "I'm glad the two of you can find something amusing about her being injured." Brusquely, she scanned Beverly with a tricorder. "Minor cuts and bruises. What the hell were you doing to yourself?" "Standard security program, safeties activated…" Beverly hesitated, then sighed as she met Kate's probing gaze. "Activated but muted." "Beverly, we've had this talk – and Kathryn, you've heard it enough, and why didn't you stop her?" Her gaze swinging between them, she ended up looking at Beverly. "And where the hell was Jean-Luc?" "I know we've had the talk, Kathryn didn't know anything about it, she came in when I was finishing, and Jean-Luc is in his office. I just needed to work off some…things." Beverly extended an arm so Kate could suture the small cuts. "You heard what happened this morning?" "Just that Felisa's appointment needed to be switched from tomorrow to today." Kate moved Beverly's arm slightly, then bent over another cut. "She's in excellent health, for all she's been through, but you knew that." "Yes." Beverly winced as Kate touched a bruise before running another tool over it, "there was an attack on the house where we were staying. Will and I got out just in time, and Starfleet managed to catch the crews of the vessels. I had to identify some of them." She finished, shaking the arm Kate had been working on, then extending the other for treatment. "I see." Kate lifted an eyebrow, but didn't ask any more questions about Beverly's activities. "Felisa still needs to gain some weight, some nutritional supplements as well, same as you. I put it on a padd for her to give you when she got home. From what I understand, the psychological testing went well also." "For all she's been through, she's amazing." Beverly smiled, then sobered. "Although, I'm concerned about her social development. She hasn't had the opportunities to be around other children, it overwhelmed her a bit when we were coming back to Earth." "Deanna could advise you better than I, or the doctors who saw her today might have some suggestions," Kate shrugged, "but I'd say, just continue letting her go at her own pace. Introduce new people and situations slowly, she's mature and confident enough to let you know what she needs." "I thought about bringing Naomi over to meet her." Kathryn spoke up. "Naomi would be perfect for her to meet. She's been through a lot for one so young as well." Kate finished up on Beverly's other arm, then scanned her again. "Any other complaints or developments on that little matter we talked about yesterday?" "Um…" Beverly flushed slightly, "no other complaints, and we're working on that little matter." "Good." She closed the tricorder. "Deanna said you're all staying at Kathryn's sister's house?" "It's actually a farm." Kathryn supplied, standing as Beverly slid off the bed. "In Indiana." "Whatever." Kate lifted a shoulder in a slight shrug. "Call me if you need anything else…and Beverly…" "I know, take it easy. Your way, not mine." She smiled. "Thanks again Kate, I'll see you in a few days, I'm sure." "I was actually going to ask if you'd thought any more about teaching a seminar session, in addition to telling you to take it easy." Kate's lips twitched slightly as she crossed the room to the replicator. "Guilty conscience?" "Oh." Beverly laughed softly, "I'm still thinking about it, I'll let you know. I'll see you in a few days." "Here." Kate turned and tossed something to Beverly. "You might need this." Beverly automatically caught the item tossed at her and blinked. "That bad, hmm?" "Let's just say Jean-Luc will know you've been up to something if you don't fix yourself up slightly." Kate smiled. "And in this case, what he doesn't know…" "Thanks again." As Kate left the room, Beverly pulled the band holding her hair off, then managed to work the brush though it, pulling out most of the tangles. A few minutes later, she slipped the band back on and turned to Kathryn. "Better?" "You look like you've had quite the boring afternoon." Eyes twinkling, Kathryn held out the bag, waiting as Beverly dropped the brush in, then took it from her. "Unfortunately, that may make Jean-Luc think I've been up to something." Beverly sighed. "Oh well." Crossing the room, she touched a companel. "Admiral Picard's office please." "Picard here." Came his response a moment later. "Answering your own calls?" She teased. "Beverly?" In his office, he straightened, surprised to hear from her. "Only those from Medical, I thought it would be Kate. Are you all right?" "I'm fine, we just stopped by to see Kate." Beverly lifted an eyebrow at Kathryn, daring her to say anything else. "Are you almost ready to go?" "I've a few more things to wrap up here, Deanna took Felisa shopping, then was transporting back to Phoebe's house." He paused, "you said we?" "Kathryn Janeway and I." Beverly frowned. "How long will you be?" "No longer than an hour." He glanced at the pile of padds on his desk. "Do you want to wait here?" Kathryn touched Beverly's arm and mouthed something, causing Beverly to blink, then nod before answering Jean-Luc. "I think Kathryn and I will follow Deanna's example, then meet you back there as well." "If you're sure." Jean-Luc frowned. She'd been hesitant to venture out on her own since her rescue, and now she was voluntarily going shopping with Kathryn Janeway? "She'll be fine, Jean-Luc. We'll transport to a merchandise area, then back to the house." Kathryn inserted smoothly. "We'll call if there are any problems." "Well then," he let out a breath. "I'll see you back at the house." "Jean-Luc, I'll be fine." Beverly reassured him, throwing a grateful smile toward Kathryn. "I know." He relaxed back into his chair. "Deanna called earlier, said Felisa's medical tests went fine." "That's what Kate said." Beverly nodded, even though he couldn't see her. "I should have known you couldn't stay away from there." He chuckled softly. "I'll see you shortly." "Likewise." She touched the panel, cutting the link. "So, shopping?" Kathryn raised an eyebrow. "I do need to get a few things for Jean-Luc and myself. If Felisa's with Deanna, she'll come back with quite the wardrobe." Beverly laughed softly. "For both of them. And if Deanna's secure enough to take Felisa out…" "If we went somewhere here…" Kathryn gazed at her for a moment, then turned to the replicator. A moment later, she handed Beverly a pair of sunglasses and a hat. "You know, you look a lot like that Starfleet officer who was just brought back from Cardassia." Putting the glasses on and tucking her hair up into the hat, Beverly laughed and affected a slight accent. "You know, I've been hearing that a lot. They say everyone has a double somewhere, little did I know when I came out to visit my dear chum Kathryn, that I'd hear about mine." "Hiding in the open." Kathryn gestured toward the door. "Shall we?" Laughing, the two women moved through the door. (end part 20) -- Stephen Ratliff ASC Stories Only Forwarding In the Pattern Buffer at: http//trekiverse.crosswinds.net/feed/ Yahoo!
