When Kirk turned to mount the transporter pad, he beheld the pretty
brunette he had danced with at the science lab Xmas party.  She was
giving him a funny look.  Oh, brother.  What was that about?

Spock was giving Kirk a look, too.  Spock's look said, "What is up with
her? Is something up?"

Kirk returned to Spock's side, and reassured him with a few pungent and
pointed remarks.  It seemed to have the desired effect.  Spock seemed
mollified, and Dr. Noel (the brunette) seemed chastened.

One thing Kirk did not need right then was the prospect of Vulcan
pillow-talk.
