Rating: PG-13 Archive: yes for ASC Feedback: Wanted and welcomed, by post or by e-mail Turning her thoughts back to her speech, Winn let them wander, gazing out the window, where Bajor's sun shined in the sky, cleansing the air of impurities. She let herself think about the history of the Starships Enterprise, about events the NCC-1701 and the NCC-1701-A had been witness to, places their captains and crew had journeyed to. She reviewed in her mind, as well, the events that had brought her to this time and place. She took no pleasure from the thought of what must transpire, for this particular Winn Adami, unlike her other-dimensional counterpart's descendant, was by no means a fanatic, nor was she mad with power. This Winn Adami was simply someone who found herself, much to her own surprise, extremely capable at the art of leadership. She had found her world in need of such leadership, and offered it, and it had been accepted with thanks. No more were the cities over-crowded with the population of two worlds, no more were there food shortages, or shortages of medical supplies. Those who had wanted to stake claims on undeveloped land had been given title to those lands, and those who had come forward with solutions to various problems had received free hand in putting them into action. But still , for all that she had accomplished in things material, she had known, as leader of her world's secular and religious lives, that the people hungered for more than food, despaired for more than room to live. And so, she had found herself accepting Kor's offer of scientific research into the only true solution. Full restoration of the Celestial Temple, and regained communion with the Prophets Of Bajor. Three years, it took, with cloaked vessels flying under the Flag Of Kahless, running sensor sweeps and taking readings. Experiments in the lab yielded potential solution after potential solution, all proven useless in real life. Then, six months ago, word had come from the scientists. Success achieved, ready for real life implantation. Irony of ironies, the science was derived from the wonders of the Genesis technology, advanced far beyond what had been achieved before. Then, of course, a cover story was needed. A reason for Bajor to withdraw from all treaty obligations with the Federation and the Romulan Star Empire. The Marethans were deemed to be a suitable third party, and events began from that point. Use Marethans backed by Kor's ships to attack Earth, then abandon them. Make Starfleet see the Marethan Legion as the enemy. Bring the Federation's most legendary starship to Bajor and render her useless, to set an example for all to see. All in all, Winn told herself, quite simple. Thanking the Prophets once again, she then returned to the composing of her speech, only to be interrupted a few minutes later. It was Odo. "I'm sorry to bother you, First Minister.", he stated, hurriedly. "No bother, Odo. What is it?" Odo shifted in his seat, uncomfortable. "I've been informed, just now, of Nerys' having been arrested. Is that true?" Winn answered carefully. Odo's support and skills were vital to the smooth running of her government, to upset him was a truly bad idea. As she spoke, Winn asked herself if sending his life partner away for all eternity was really a viable option. "It is true, but, I must be honest with you, Odo. I may have acted in haste, and if so, must correct my mistake." "How so?", asked as the Changeling leaned forward, as if he could leap right through his viewscreen and into Winn's office. "I won't lie to you. Nerys has chosen to oppose my policies, and I must remove her from her position. However, having reflected upon her words, I am considering a compromise." "That being?", a question asked with tension in the asker's voice. "I may, and I stress the word, may, be persuaded into creating an autonomous region on Bajor, for those who disagree with my plan for our world." "Where? How?" "D'artak province...it is our world's last untapped resource." "It's barely habitable!" "Odo? Do you believe I would condemn a single child of Bajor to a slow death? They would be free to do as they see fit. Free to choose whatever government they want, free to ally with any power. Would they choose to refuse help? Would not their treasured Federation offer terraforming or life-support technology?" As she spoke, Winn's mind raced. Could she find a way to save all her people? Could she save her world without causing the deaths of almost three hundred innocents? And, should she find a way...would Kor let her actions go unchallenged? Or, had the future she been to unfold in a different fashion. but with the same results in the end? "Of course, they would accept help, and of course, the Federation would offer it." "Odo, my authority to you. Order Nerys released, at once. Inform all detainees that I am working towards their release, within the week. Perhaps the Terran tradition of beginning anew each year can serve us well." "Perhaps." "One more detail. Quietly, watch Kor's warriors, one and all. If possible, watch Kor himself. Should these Disciples Of Kahless disagree with my vision for our world, we may once again find ourselves fighting those who promised us friendship." "And you, First Minister?" "I....must hope that a man named James Tiberius Kirk is the man I believe him to be." "I speak from experience. Be honest with him, at all times, and he will be that man." "Then honest I must be. I will call you, shortly." Winn watched her screen return to the text of her speech. She deleted it and began to rewrite, frantically. -- Forwarded to ASCL by: Stephen Ratliff ASC Stories Only Forwarding In the Pattern Buffer at: http//trekiverse.crosswinds.net/feed/ ASCL is a stories-only list, no discussion.
