Author: Pseudonymonious Puppet de Sock Contact: pseudonymsockpuppet@hotmail.com Series: DS9 Rating: G Archive: sure, whatever, where ever. Summary: If you plot the downfall of your neighbor, you often will be Author's note: With apologies to Aesop, these are various Aesop's Fables re-written for the Star Trek Universe. As before, yes, I'm a sock puppet. If I wanted the world to know who I really am, I would have posted it at my website and as myself. Since I'm not, I don't. "Tell us a story," the children begged, crowding around the elderly Kai. They were in the garden of the temple after school on a hot afternoon and the Kai always seemed to have time to sit in the shade with them and tell stories. Smiling at their youthful exuberance, she sat on a bench in a shaded area of the garden and waited for the children to settle in at her feet. "What shall it be today? Perhaps the story of the Bajoran and the Cardassian?" "Yes," the children cheered in unison. "It was an ill-fated time," the Kai began. "The Bajoran was trying hard to improve himself and his surroundings for his children, to create a place where they could live their lives and be happy. The Cardassian lived beside the Bajoran and even though he thought himself better than the Bajoran, he pretended to be a good neighbor. Then one day, evil threatened the Bajoran and the Cardassian; it was the Dominion coming to take everything in its path. The Bajoran was determined not to be conquered ever again and so he sought others who felt the same way, an alliance of those who would not bow to the ominous force of the Dominion. The Cardassian continued his pretense of friendship with the Bajoran, but secretly, in the dark of the night, he would sneak away to meet with the leaders of the Dominion. On the fateful day when the Dominion appeared, the Cardassian turned his back on the Bajoran and the Alliance. He had formed a pact of his own with the Dominion, agreeing to help them defeat the opposition in exchange for power and all of the space that he felt entitled to. The Cardassian who had pretended to be a good neighbor now fought alongside the Dominion and their allies, trying to slaughter the Bajoran and all others who would defy them. He used all of the knowledge that he had gleaned from the Bajoran and the other Allies to help the Dominion plot the downfall of every member of the Alliance. The Bajoran fought hard, everyone in the Alliance struggled and sacrificed, many lives were lost in the battles that followed. Now the Alliance was comprised of the most unusual members, people who had despised and fought each other for ages. In the face of the overwhelming force that the Dominion was threatening with, they put aside their hatred and worked together, combining their unique knowledge and abilities to become stronger. They created a whole that was greater than the sum of its parts. Many individuals, including the Bajoran, reached deep inside their hearts and found strength that they had never known. The Cardassian's home was the site of the final battle and it suffered major destruction. When the Alliance emerged victorious and the Dominion left, the others who had sided with the Dominion also turned their back on the Cardassian and left him to face his neighbor alone. The Bajoran could have killed the Cardassian in revenge, but he saw the rotten fruits of the Cardassian's labors and remembered the wisdom of the Prophets. He did not want to reap what the seed of bloodthirsty vengeance would cultivate, so he left the pitiful Cardassian standing among the ruins of his home. He went back to working toward the betterment of his own home, living a simple life and striving to be a good Bajoran in the eyes of the Prophets." When the story was over, the sun was beginning to set. Kai Kira sent the children on their way and sat in solitude watching the shadows slowly creep across the grounds, confident that tomorrow morning it would rise again on a free Bajor. -- Constable Katie, ASC* Archive team Archive: www.trekiverse.org | trekiverse.crosswinds.net | qcontinuum.trekiverse.net Submissions: submissions trekiverse.org For archive updates: ASC-Archive-annc-subscribe@yahoogroups.com ASC* FAQs: http://trekiverse.crosswinds.net/FAQs/ ASC Stories-Only list: ascl-subscribe @ yahoogroups dot com ASCEM Stories-Only list: ascem-s-subscribe @ yahoogroups dot com ASCL is a stories-only list, no discussion.
