Possible It came upon my e-mail server, As I pondered weak and weary, The state of the world, So dreary, At 10/15/2004, 7:35:42 PM Central Daylight Time, it arrived the server proclaimed, The title of the e-mail missive burned through my brain, "Lenin and Enterprise", A note from a true Trekker and a friend it began, "Jim, I know you're not an Enterprise fan but have you been watching the current season? If not then check this out. It takes place during WWII.. Enterprise was sent back in time by the Temporal Agent Davis because history has been changed in that the Nazis had taken over Europe and the east coast of the US. It turns out someone has assassinated Lenin in 1916 so the Revolution never happened. Therefore, the Germans were able to roll over France, England and part of the US because the Soviets weren't there to stop them. Larry" My mind boggled, Images bubbled forth from the quantum froth of my mind stretched infinitely across the time-lines, Vladimir Illyich studiously laboring over Hegel in the Berne Library in Switzerland in 1916, Dialectics, unity and interpenetration of opposites, negation of the negation, "Leaps!" Notes carefully penciled down in a schoolboy's notebooks, Russian Cyrillic, German, Latin, and the occasional English or French scrawl, As Europe drowns itself in trenches full of blood and the poison gas of World War One, Vladimir Illyich seeks a way out ... in books. The Revolution, "Land, Bread, Peace!" Is a figment, a vague dream, a not-yet-to-be ghost wisp of a possible future, When suddenly the assassin tip toes up behind, And the bald head falls bloody, face down into the open pages of "The Science of Logic". So the rest is history-Not. No Russian Revolution, No industrialized Russia, No planned economy, (Paid for at such a cost), To produce the T-34 tanks, That blunt the panzer's blitz in ‘41 and ‘42, No climb back from the precipice of Stalingrad, No mighty clash of armor and human flesh at Kursk, To seal the Nazi fate, No Red Flag over the Reichstag in ‘45, Rather, Europe in chains, And the Eastern U.S. occupied in ‘44, How will Archer put right the scene? Restore the time line? I know the show will never match my sweet imagination, But I must give the writers credit, They wrote what I could never, For "Only Nixon could go to China". Yet it still does not forgive, The block of stone, That is Archer's brain and morals, The silly Xindi, The backward story lines and "plots", Redeemed only by poor Porthos every week. Still, I must seek out a new tape for my VCR, To record the show that I never, never do, Enterprise's "Storm Front 2", The premise so much more true, Than "City on the Edge of Forever", With its wry condemnation of pacifists gone amok, I know that "Storm Front 2" will never match my sweet quantum imagination, But I must give credit where credit is due, In this world so bleak and bleary, "Enterprise" just got a little less dreary.
