GD [PG] by Sisko 2374 Summary: During the Cardassian occupation of Bajor, Gul Dukat files his yearly Disclaimer: Parmount owns all of what we have seen, I just try to probe deeper. Feedback: Yeah Archive: ASC Legat Gritang sighed and stared into the sub space view screen linking Central Command with Terok Nor. "How many more this time Dukat? That is, according to your best available intelligence estimates." Gul Dukat glanced at the information padd in his right hand. "No more than two million, Legat. That should allow us to maintain control of the capitol and all major cities on the outlying continents for at least the next two years." Gritang leaned back in his chair. "So you're telling me that you need two million more soldiers simply to avoid losing the existing territory already under our control? What about next year Dukat? How many more will you need? How many more provinces will we have lost to the Bajoran terrorists by then?" A look of alarm passed over Dukat's face. "Forgive me Legat, but that last sentence sounds rather defeatist." Gritang shrugged. "Simply a projection based upon your previous performance Dukat." Dukat swallowed and summoned control of himself in the face of his superior. "My performance ... is not the issue. The only reason the terrorists have made any gains at all is solely due to the failure of Central Command to allocate sufficient troop strengths to maintain planet wide security. My requests have consistently been ignored. I never receive what I ask for." "Yes, because you always overestimate what you actually need. Let me tell you something Dukat. We are currently engaged in a war with the Federation. The Federation Front receives top priority for soldiers, ships, materials and supplies. Bajor is merely an irritant in the rear area. While its important as a source of certain ores, its overall strategic value is minimal. The only reason we continue to hold on to it at all is for political reasons. We've had it for nearly fifty years, to abandon it now would be taken by our enemies as a sign of weakness. They might begin to believe that the Cardassian empire is disintegrating." The Legat paused for effect. "But rest assured Dukat, if you cannot bring the terrorists to heel with the forces we give you, if you continue to loose provinces to their control, then Bajor will be sacrificed to the voles for the betterment of the war effort against the Federation. Do I make myself clear?" Dukat felt the heat rising in his face. "Perfectly." Gritang nodded. "Good. Central Command will consider your request for two million more troops and get back to you shortly. For Cardassia." "For Cardassia." Dukat's patriotic farewell was without emotion as he watched the Legat's visage disappear from the view screen, replaced by the symbol of the Cardassian Union. Rising from his chair, he walked to the window, gazing down at the blue-green seas of Bajor. A million was the most they would give him. What could he do with minimal reinforcements like that? The island continent of Musilla came into view. Its northern province, Dakhur, was covered with clouds today, concealing the Bajoran terrorists who ruled it by night. It was such a thorn in his side. If he could just wrest away from the Bajorans one province, show the might and terror of Cardassia to the Bajorans in one place, the resistance would surely collapse elsewhere as word spread of the terror unleashed upon one small province. Yes, of course, he had been going about it all the wrong way. Instead of thinning out his troops in isolated garrisons, attempting to hold on to what he had, he needed to group his reinforcements into one giant mailed fist, come down hard upon the terrorists and their urban and rural supporters, make an example of one province for all of Bajor, then quickly move onto the next. He would begin with Dakhur, as soon as those million troops arrived. Fire and sword, that is what these Bajorans understood best. "I can learn from my mistakes. My only fault is having a too kind and generous nature." Never more.
