I panicked. Not an excuse--I don't make excuses. I'm just trying to
explain my actions to myself as they replay in my mind. I panicked,
and with the clatter of military boots over my head, a little thing
like twentieth-century foreign history was farthest from my thoughts.

I should have made him beam first. If they caught me, I'd know what to
do.

But Pavel? In this time... he's the enemy. What if he sets off World
War Three? We won't have to wait for the probe to see the Earth in
storms.

I should never have left him.
