In=20 DISCLAIMER: Paramount may own them, but their hearts belong to each=20 other and their bodies belong to us, to do with as we like. (Sure=20 as hell beats Barbie and Ken!). No financial profit is being made=20 from this, so relax, all you suits in the Paramount Legal=20 Department!=20=20 "ONE MAN'S MEAT=85" Captain Kirk paused outside the cabin door holding the Tupperware=20 bowl in his hands. He hoped the salad inside would prove=20 satisfactory to his Vulcan friend; when Spock had invited him to=20 dinner in his quarters after today's duty shift, it had been so=20 sudden that Kirk hadn't been able to think of a thing except: //I'm=20 going to be alone with my friend at last! What better way to tell=20 him I love him then over a romantic meal?//=20=20 Then Spock had told him "Since I will be preparing the main dish,=20 would you be good enough to prepare the salad, Jim?"=20=20 Kirk's first impulse had been to panic; he ate very few salads,=20 usually as a side dish to meat or pasta, and had no idea how to make=20 them. But knowing Spock was a dedicated vegetarian, he was=20 determined to make a salad that would please even a Vulcan's finicky=20 taste buds. So, after putting in a special order to the ship's=20 Hydroponics section and looking up his mother's favorite recipes in=20 his Home Correspondence file on his personal computer, he managed to=20 come up with a salad recipe that he was sure would knock Spock's=20 socks off. Hopefully, the rest of his clothing would follow. Balancing the opaque bowl with the bright yellow cover in the crook=20 of his left arm, he carefully lifted his right arm to press the door=20 buzzer. The door whooshed open, revealing Spock in a comfortable- looking lounging outfit made of black silk. "Thank you for coming,=20 Captain. Please enter."=20=20 Kirk entered the dimly lit cabin eagerly, holding his dinner=20 offering in both hands. The smell of incense filled the air. Spock=20 waved him over to the table, which had been covered with a white=20 cloth and set for two, with a single round, thick yellow candle=20 burning in the center. The ceramic candleholder it was resting on=20 was ornamented with delicate, pale yellow flowers at the base. A=20 closer look revealed that they were ceramic, too, part of the design=20 that had been sculpted into the clay, meant to catch the wax=20 drippings. A bottle of red wine and a corkscrew sat next to the=20 candle. As Kirk was setting his salad dish on the table, Spock went=20 into a little alcove off to the right and emerged holding a covered=20 roasting pan.=20=20 "This has been in the slow cooker all day," Spock informed him. "I=20 usually use it to prepare bean dishes or rice with vegetables for=20 myself after a long duty shift. But knowing your tastes in food=20 tend towards the carnivorous, I decided to prepare a portion of=20 animal flesh." Setting the wide, flat pan on the table, he lifted=20 the lid to reveal a generous-sized porterhouse steak, covered with=20 gravy, with a few small, roasted potatoes on top. "Thank you, Spock, it looks delicious!" Kirk exclaimed. "I know it=20 couldn't have been easy for you to handle meat. I hope this makes=20 up for it." He took the lid off his salad bowl and presented his=20 carefully prepared salad: a whole avocado, cut into four slices,=20 laid on a bed of Romaine lettuce, garnished with red onions, cherry=20 tomatoes and croutons, sprinkled lovingly with olive oil and white=20 wine vinegar.=20=20 "That looks as delectable as your steak, Jim. You do know that=20 avocadoes are considered as much of a delicacy on my home world as=20 steak is on yours?"=20 "Yes, I noticed that you only eat it on special occasions. Whenever=20 we eat out in some fancy restaurant, you always order avocado, the=20 same way Bones always orders Southern Fried Chicken and I always=20 order steak. Well, I wanted tonight to be a special occasion."=20=20 "Really, Jim? Would you tell me why?" Spock's serious mien was at=20 variance with the look of affection in his warm, brown eyes.=20=20 "I imagine it's the same reason you went to so much trouble to=20 prepare steak, even though you don't eat meat. And the same reason=20 you're wearing that sexy outfit." Kirk smiled broadly at his=20 friend, who modestly bowed his head and folded his arms over the=20 portion of his hairy chest that was revealed though the front of his=20 black silk kimono.=20=20 "I simply prefer to be comfortable at the end of the day. I also=20 wished to create a relaxing atmosphere for you as well."=20=20 "So I noticed." Kirk looked around appreciatively at the low=20 lighting, the carefully prepared steak and potatoes on the perfectly=20 set table, the bottle of red wine. Then he noticed that the smell=20 of incense was coming from Spock's sleeping alcove behind the=20 privacy screen. The soft, red glow therein was from the firepot=20 beast, which served as an incense burner for meditation as well as=20 symbolizing the hearth of home to all space faring Vulcans. "Spock,=20 were you planning on going to bed early?" he asked mischievously.=20=20 "As a matter of fact, I was," Spock admitted. "I also planned to=20 share a special dessert with you after dinner. I was able to obtain=20 fresh strawberries and heavy cream at the last space station, so=20 that we could test a theory which I overheard you discussing with=20 Doctor McCoy the other night in the officer's lounge." "Oh? Which theory was that?"=20=20 "The one where the good doctor asked you if fresh strawberries and=20 cream taste better when eaten in the nude. You stated that it=20 depended upon whom you were eating them with." "Really? Well, I'll be happy to help you test this theory after=20 dinner, Spock. I hope that sexy outfit of yours is easily=20 removable."=20=20 "I will allow you to remove it yourself," Spock told him in a=20 baritone rumble that sounded like a deep-toned purr, "provided you=20 will allow me to assist you in removing your uniform."=20=20 Kirk smiled as he reached for the wine bottle and=20 corkscrew. "Spock, I think this is the beginning of a beautiful=20 friendship."=20=20 END ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ ASCEM messages are copied to a mailing list.
