Scotty's voice attracted Leonard and the children out of the living room and into the corridor. But more than that, it was the clucking they heard that made them curious. "What sort of beast is that?" Leonard stepped back as he saw something white fluttering under the arms of his husband. "Our Christmas goose." Scotty smiled contentedly. "I thought I'd treat us to something really special this year!" 'But it's still alive!" Leonard looked sceptically at the goose from a certain distance - one never knew if it would peck. His kids were less careful. "Great, a goose!" exclaimed Duncan and stroked the bird's feathers. "Are we keeping her? " Scarlett asked immediately and added: "I'll call her Auguste." "No, we're not keeping her," stated Leonard categorically. "We will eat her on Christmas Day with stuffing and gravy," added Scotty. As if the goose had understood him she began to flutter so violently that she nearly knocked Scotty off his feet. "Be careful that you don't make a mess in the house. Thank goodness I've finally finished my Christmas cleaning," Len warned. "Where on earth did you get her from?" "From Lieutenant Kowalsky," Scotty explained. "His family has a goose farm in Poland. He assured me that these animals are the best tasting in the whole universe." Leonard still wasn't entirely convinced. "I hope you don't expect me to kill and pluck her?" he growled. "No, no," Scotty hurriedly assured him. "I will do that myself." "I don't want to eat Auguste," Scarlett cried, in tears. Her brother pulled a sullen face and agreed: "She's our pet." Leonard sighed. "I knew it. You had to bring a living animal home." The look he gave Scotty made him fear that this would become a lonely night. "Look," he said to the twins. "Auguste's destiny is to be a Christmas goose. She would be sad if we didn't eat her. Believe me." Leonard pushed the children in the direction of the stairway. "Go to your rooms and do your homework." He didn't consider their protest that they hadn't got any homework to do because tomorrow was the start of the Christmas holidays. After the twins had disappeared, Leonard turned towards living room door. "I don't want to have anything to do with this," he explained categorically. " You'll have to get her ready for roasting." But he didn't find peace for long. Especially as rattling sounds came again and again out of the kitchen. Finally he couldn't stand it any longer and got up. In the kitchen he saw the purest chaos. The dishes had fallen off the table. Fortunately, most of them were made of unbreakable material, otherwise the mess would have been much worse. Even worse was that the glass screen of his favourite antique standard lamp lay broken on the floor. The spice containers also were knocked off their board and had distributed their contents all over the floor and table. On the latter sat the goose, striking with her wings and chopping with her beak at Scotty. "I will clean up later," Scotty quickly assured him before Leonard got his speech back. "And I'd better do this in the barn," he added as he finally managed to get hold of the goose again. The look Leonard gave him made it clear that there would be more then one lonely night. /// Half an hour later a rather tousled Scotty stuck his head through the door of the living room. "Where is the goose? " Leonard asked in a not very friendly tone. "In the barn," came the answer. "I'll go and buy some food, a goose run and a frozen goose." ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ ASCEM messages are copied to a mailing list.
