Mirror Uhura leans over the desk, sharpening her blades. Snick. Snick. Snick. The bright dagger gleams in the light in unison with every one of her carefully manicured fingernails, a sharp tooth, eager and deadly. Mirror Sulu enters without hitting the announcer. He swaggers towards her, throwing out his half-bared chest. She draws up cooly, gracefully. "I was wondering when you'd come." "I'm here now," Sulu gloats. "That's all that matters." Uhura makes a quarter turn away from him. "You still haven't killed the captain." One hand slides down to rest on her hip. "Assassinations don't happen in one day. They require planning, patience." "I see. Where does the part about getting piss-drunk every night fit into it?" Sulu colors, then threatens. "I'm chief of security on this ship. I only keep you around because I like you." His eyes shine wildly. "Make a wrong move and k-kh-kh." He draws his dagger. "You wouldn't want me to have to report you to the captain, pretty lady." She strikes suddenly, twisting his arm around so that his dagger now lays against his own throat. "The question, baby, is what have you done for me lately." She laughs and releases him. He is shaken, but laughs and reasserts his macho pose. "I could go elsewhere for the night, if you're not interested," he says, but she sees right through him. "You know why I put up with you?" she says, tapping the broad side of her dagger against his chest. "Because," she says with a smile, "you make a good pet, Kurano Sulu." End. Note for the Japanese-impaired: The name Hikari or Hikaru means bright, giving off light. It is a very common name in Japan. The Japanese describe a person as "bright" (akarui) when they display a cheerful and friendly aspect, what we might call a sunny personality. I wanted a name that indicated the opposite. Naturally I was not going to find something so inauspicious among modern Japanese common names, so I invented Kurano, from "kurai", dark, and "no", the nominalizer, which can be represented by any number of common name kanji. I was originally going to use "o", son, but the resultant name, Kurao, was not pleasing to the ear. [Non-text portions of this message have been removed] ------------------------ Yahoo!
