There's no money in this for me either. Betas: Many thanks to Babs and jm who Betaed for me! Most apreciated. :) Summary: Picard is mourning Data's death, and Q tries to make him feel better. Yesterday. The Reman ship exploding, dispersing the remains of Commander Data into the void. Before. Tasha Yar lying lifeless on a desert planet surface. Now. Q gently strokes his lover, holding him in his arms and saying nothing. His captain called out to him - to him - in something other than rage or frustration, and so he has come. Q could tell that Jean-Luc was wondering why he wasn’t surprised, but neither of them has mentioned it. Other emotions are getting in the way. Jean-Luc is crying, mourning, asking for reasons that do not exist. At least not in this universe. Q sighs, and wishes he were allowed to make the stubborn Captain understand. Before/Now. Tasha and Data’s wedding. The holodeck is made up to look exactly like a rustic wedding chapel in Vegas, cheap plastic decorations and all. Deanna and Beverly are dressed as cowgirls - 1970’s style. They are holding hands. Will is performing the ceremony - there are captain’s pips on the collar of his dress uniform. Then/Now. Tasha holding the lifeless body of Data in her arms as phaser fire flies around them. There is a gaping hole in his head. Smoke is steaming from it, quietly. In a moment or two she too is shot. Later/Now. Tasha finding Data in bed with two other women. She smiles, asking if she can join in. The women fade - they are holograms. Afterwards/Now. Data standing on the bridge of his own command. Tasha - his first officer - stands with him. They smile at one another across the room. Now/Not Now. Tasha in the medical bay of a starbase, giving birth to twins. Their skin is tinted pale-ish gold. There is sadness in her eyes mixed with the joy. She is alone. Sometime/Then. Soft-strong bodies play together in the Cardassian-made bed of some far-away space station. Data smiles, and it reaches his blue eyes in true emotion. Tasha smiles back at him. Her eyes are golden. Now/Then. Data running through the forest, pine-like branches breaking off and falling down behind him. His uniform is torn. He is alone, but smiling. Someone is following him. Before/Afterwards. Data and Tasha kissing, on a beach on Risa. They are naked. It is nearly midnight, and a cool, pleasant breeze is blowing as their bodies meet. Now. "She told me to take care of him", Jean-Luc muses. "Can you imagine?" Q smiled at him. "Yes", he said. Jean-Luc would never understand. Not unless Q planted the knowledge in his mind, and if he did that Jean-Luc would never forgive him. He didn’t like being tampered with, least of all without his knowledge. Still… It pained him so to see his beloved Captain suffer so needlessly. Perhaps… If he did… This… Later/Before. A breakfast table. Tasha eats as Data watches, intrigued. There is a playful look on her face as she carefully cuts everything into tiny pieces to make the meal last longer. Under the table, a cat nudges her. Then/Soon. Tasha, sleepy-looking, reading something on a screen in her quarters. There are Commander’s pips on her uniform. On her desk stands a small holo-cube of Data. She activates it, and replicates herself some coffee. Now/Before. Data and Tasha arguing in Tasha’s quarters on the Enterprise. Her face is red from shouting, her hair mussed from something or other. Data, his hair as immaculate as always, seems eerily calm, though his voice is booming. His words hurt her, and she cries, unexpectedly. After/When. Riker and Troi’s wedding. Everyone is gloriously naked, and Tasha smiles gloatingly at the envious looks her fellow female officers give her. The ceremony is over, and everyone cheers. Data looks good naked. Now. Jean-Luc jolts, and sits abruptly upright in the bed. "What did you do", he asks, but Q merely smiles. Jean-Luc’s face slowly changes expression. "I see", he says finally. "This is how you see reality. Data - Tasha - they aren’t dead. Not everywhere! Not everywhen! That’s what you have been trying to tell me, isn’t it?" Q looks him into the eyes and smiles yet again. "Yes", he lies. It’s not the truth by far, but it’s as close as any mortal will ever be able to get. "Tell me", Jean-Luc says, "are they happy?" Then/If. A red house behind a white picket fence. A swing hangs from a think birch-branch, swaying softly in the breeze. From within the house is heard human and android laughter. Now. "Yes", Q says. "Mostly, yes." Softly, they begin to make love.
