Summary: A brief moment of contact opens up new possibilities between Conscious thought proceeded physical movement as it sometimes does and Uhura lay on the deck slowly cognizant of the myriad aches her body was experiencing and an oddly skewed view of the bridge. "What am I doing laying here?" She thought, but was too sluggish to answer her own question. Then it came to her "we were hit." No that wasn't quite right either. All she did know, all she could remember was that the impact had been swift and hard and she had been thrown so far from her post that she was now laying by the turbo lift doors. That would explain her view and the pain. She looked up briefly and shook her head as if to clear her thoughts. That was a mistake, if anything it caused her vision to blur for a moment and she let it drop back to the floor, as controlled chaos ensued all around her. Everyone else on the bridge was coming to slowly, some resuming their positions, others checking their instruments without apparent concern for their physical state. She heard Kirk's voice, sharp and short demanding a report of the situation. It seemed all systems were operational and any detectable damage minimal. All of this information sifted through her mind bit by bit, slowly she contemplated moving, felt she could but her brain and body were not yet coordinated. Abruptly a voice that should have been sharp with alarm yet was calm and even, goaded from her current state "Lt are you alright?" Spock, it was Spock. She wanted to answer but for a moment was too confused to do so and then she made the effort. However, before she could fully rouse herself, he was there in sure swift steps. Strong Vulcan hands grasped her firmly beneath her arms and lifted her up half carrying, half walking her to her post. Her mind was still a bit hazy and she wanted to protest that she needed no help, yet she continued to allow him to guide her back to her seat. "He is so strong," she thought abstractly, to have lifted her so easily. She felt both the heat and gentleness in those strong hands now touching her and a visual image she knew she should have been ashamed of came to mind along with the thought, "I've always wondered what it would be like to have him touch me." Then laughed silently and chastised herself for such an unprofessional observation at so critical a time, then realized no one would know. Illicit though it was, the image was a pleasing one and she further indulged herself in it, which caused her to stumble briefly, when another pair of hands grasped her firmly, and helped guide her. It was the captain, one hand on her elbow the other holding her hand leading her on. She wanted to protest tell him that she needed no help, was in very good hands already and laughed silently again at her intentional pun when a thought not her own whispered through her mind. //Thank you Lieutenant but you needn't be so concerned. I assure you the pleasure is mine as well.// She knew that voice deep, smooth, soothing, and infinitely warmer than when spoken aloud. It belonged to the first officer and it washed through her like a cleansing rain. She would have stumbled again, but was so surprised that she stopped moving completely, forcing both men to halt as well. She glanced briefly at Spock, but his face was set along its usual lines, immobile, impassive, unreadable. She was to stunned to fully appreciate his response, all she could think was, "I can hear him, she thought in wonder. How is that possible?" Then another thought struck her. "If I can hear him, can he hear me?" When he had lifted her off the deck, she had welcomed his touch and the less than chaste image that had accompanied it. The recollection of her first reaction brought the image back full blown causing her to blush and slump, this time in dismay. Both men tightened their grip as if she would fall. She was mortified and tried unsuccessfully to hide her inner face, was not sure how, and realized it was pointless to do so. This time his inner voice was colored with a hint of amusement accompanied by an unmistakable visual image that was far more explicit and detailed than the one she had had. //Do not be distressed Lt. at times the sentiment is quite mutual// "I can't believe it she thought utterly shocked. She looked up at him in wonder. //You can hear me. You can really hear me. How can that be?// Without realizing it, she addressed him through the unexplainable yet now obvious link. Had slipped into doing so quite naturally and was poised to receive an answer, but when it came it wasn't Spock's voice. //If I can hear you then I'm sure he certainly can. .// Another voice had joined the two in her head. This one clipped urgent, tinged with mild surprise and a certain degree of glee. Superimposed over the question of why and how they were able to communicate in such a manner. For all that, it was also filled with unmistakable authority. The Captain. How she could feel more emotion in a voice she could not "hear" she did not know but it was there. He was there a well. It then occurred to her that her mind was now sharp and clear and had been since she had first heard Spock's voice. //I cannot hypothesize without further investigation, but my first inclination would be to attribute it to the last energy wave we experienced// The three of them stood there immobile as the sounds of the crew moving about and reporting in faded imperceptibly into muted background noise. She realized she could feel excitement from Kirk and quiet patience and subtle amusement from Spock. She turned to the captain to find him regarding her intently the ghost of a smile on his lips. He glanced briefly at Spock nodded slowly then turned his attention back to her. Her mind swirled, but was accepting as he focused all of his attention on her and a rush of emotion from him spilled into her unshielded mind. Jumbled images, memories, random thoughts and amidst it all one single thought rose clear and sharp. Hers! He had immersed himself in her unspoken passion and curiosity, wished to see it fulfilled and to share in it. All of this was expressed clearly by him, directed at her and Spock. So, she wasn't the only one with inappropriate thoughts at critical moments. Slowly a smile spread across her face. She regarded him with surprise and then looked at Spock. His gaze flickered from Kirk then back to her never changing. To look at him you would never know what he was thinking. Nevertheless, she did know as he allowed her to see in the corners of her mind his mental smile and promise of later fulfillment. The image was captivating and she couldn't help but become excited at the prospect. The mood was broken abruptly, as Kirk projected the urgency of their present situation. There would be time later to answer all the questions they each knew the others were longing to know. They nodded their heads in tacit agreement; this was so much more efficient than speech and slowly moved away from each other. As they moved away from each other their thoughts stretched and lengthened until they were no longer in contact, and then popped softly as a thread pulled taut. Uhura was once again in her own mind, all thoughts her own with none others to share the same space. She thought she would feel free, instead she felt bereft, empty already missing that which was a few moments ago was so new, but already so comforting. She felt she could have stayed in private communication with them forever. The entire exchange had lasted only seconds but she privately savored the last thoughts that both men had sent her. Right now, there was a mission to be completed. They had to find out how that last wave had affected the ship and what had caused such a violent collision. Later when the crisis was over there would be time to explore their minds in conjunction with their bodies it seemed the possibilities were endless.
