Summary: The Fleet and Maquis crews have joined It had been a long shift, a hard shift and one Tom was glad to see the end of. Once again, the oh so righteous, First Officer had been on Tom's back at every move. If he deviated even slightly off course, he was pulled up. If he questioned the Commander's decision, he was reprimanded for insolence, even if he had a valid point and kept his voice respectful. Tom had heard through the grapevine that the Captain had spoken to the First Officer over his conduct on the bridge and his attitude did improve for a while. Well at least when the Captain or Tuvok were about, but the reprimands increased when the Commander was in charge. Tom knew Chakotay hated him and wasn't intending to hide that fact. This had been the routine since the crews had joined together and the pilot was used to it, didn't like it but he lived with it. On the surface it looked like thing had settled down, differences forgotten, but if you observed what was really going on - and Tom did - then you saw that the crews worked well together but socially they didn't mix, it was Fleet and Maquis. Even after his stint in the Maquis, he wasn't one of them, he was looked on as Fleet all they way. In fact the Maquis, especially the Commander, had barely concealed their dislike for him from the start and it hadn't improved over the following weeks and months. Nothing physical just jibes as he walked by, ignoring him unless it was work, a look of disgust on their faces when he entered the mess hall. Nothing he couldn't cope with. Tom wasn't sure when he become aware that things had lightened up on the bridge. One day he realised that the Commander had not admonished him for a while and had in fact praised both him and Harry at least a couple of times in the preceding few days. While everyone seemed to go about their business as usual, Tom had become more observant, keeping an eye out for unusual activities, changes in pattern. When you'd gotten yourself into as much trouble as Tom had over his life you had to be aware of what was going on around you. Be prepared was Tom's motto. At the beginning of the week, he had noticed the Commander spending more time with Geron. Nothing suspicious in that, they were good friends from the Maquis and there was always someone with them. Paris scrutinized the pair as they laughed and watched as the Commander affectionately squeezed Geron's shoulder as he got up to leave. For a moment Tom wished he could have that affection from the First Officer, instead of the hostility and scorn that usually came his way. After weeks of civil and sometimes even cordial treatment by the Commander, Tom had slowly been lulled into a false sense of security. Arriving on the bridge, a couple of minutes late from lunch, he put his usual grin on his face and apologised, expecting the usual quip from the Commander. Instead, a stony faced First Officer reprimanded him. That was the beginning of a nightmare month for Tom; he just didn't know it yet. If no one had noticed the slight rise in tension in the Maquis contingent and that they were spending more time together, Tom had. In fact at breakfast he had observed that all the Maquis in the mess hall, had sat in a large group and seemed to be intent on their conversation. He put this at the back of his mind as he tried to keep out of the Commander's way and to make it to the end of the shift without another excuse for the First Officer to reprimand him. Time for a bit of R and R, Tom thought as he changed for Sandrine's. Maybe B'Elanna would be in tonight and would be more receptive to his advances than usual. With that thought he walked to the holodeck. B'Elanna was already there, talking to Ayala and Geron and looked beautiful as usual. Tom nodded at the group, got a drink and headed for a booth. The pilot gave the engineer one more appreciative glance, I'll approach her later when she's a bit more relaxed, the pilot thought as he sat down, keeping an eye on proceedings. Ten minutes later Tom was surprised to see the First Officer arrive. Normally the reserved Commander kept himself to himself, only mixing with the other crew at mealtimes and group activities. Always pleasant to the crew, except for Tom, since the Seska fiasco he had kept his distance from the rest of the crew, male and female alike. Maybe that was what was matter with him, a bad case of ball ache and if that was the case, if the Commander didn't get laid soon, Tom thought, he would be the one to suffer. Paris watched as Chakotay approached the group and nodded to them. As he got a drink and turned away, Geron grabbed his arm. The others moved away slightly, glances passing between them. Chakotay moved closer to Geron and whispered something in his ear. Tom watched as the younger man's face crumpled and he pulled away forcefully from the Commander and stormed out. Chakotay glanced up at Ayala, nodded and Ayala followed Geron out. For a few days after the incident, Tom watched both Geron and the Commander very closely. Geron looked distracted and visibly upset, with Ayala close by him most of the time. Chakotay kept his evil temper under control but when he was in command he usually found some reason to berate Tom and on a couple of instances, even Harry. Tom was ready to report the Commander to the Janeway, not for himself, he could cope with that, but he couldn't face seeing the look of defeat on Harry's face at the Commander's wrath, one more time. But then things changed. Once again the Commander visited Sandrine's. Tom watched as Chakotay gave a slight nod at B'Elanna, indicating she should move towards a booth. By this time Harry had joined him and cajoled him into a game of pool and Tom's observations on proceedings was lost. It wasn't till much later that Tom noticed that Chakotay and B'Elanna were no longer in the booth, in fact they were no longer in Sandrine's at all. Tom and Harry said goodnight and the pilot headed for his quarters. He was pulled up sharp by moans of pleasure, so slid into the shadows and glanced around the corner. He thought his heart would stop, kissing passionately were Chakotay and B'Elanna. The engineer looked extremely dishevelled and the Commander had only a towel around his waist, beads of water dripping down his chest, as though he had just got out of the shower. The suggestion of sex enveloped both of them. Tom had never seen Chakotay without his clothes and for a moment his eyes swept over his commanding officer with appreciation, before he felt a surge of jealousy that Chakotay had made the move on B'Elanna before him. He watched as they broke apart and B'Elanna set off for her quarters. Chakotay's eyes followed her and just as the Commander turned to go back in his cabin Tom saw a wild and aroused smile on his face. Tom thought that this look was so alien on the usually, solid and dependable face of the Commander. Tom couldn't get to sleep trying to figure out what was going on. Why had Geron, meek and mild mannered Geron, who worshipped the Commander, got upset and stormed out? And more interestingly how had Chakotay and B'Elanna got it together when the Commander never socialised? Tom was late getting up so only had time to tell Harry that he needed a word with him later. Harry looked at him baffled, but couldn't say anything as the Captain had started the briefing. Just then B'Elanna rushed in apologising. Tom looked her over. She had an obvious glow about her, Tom was sure hadn't been there yesterday morning. The pilot couldn't keep his mind on the meeting for surreptitiously watching the Commander and the engineer. The First Officer was his usual business like self, but B'Elanna kept giving Chakotay, furtive, shy glances and once, Tom noticed, their gazes locking and a knowing look passing between them. As Tom rushed to meet Harry in the mess hall, he thought to himself, that a good fuck sure improved the Commander's mood. All shift he had been giving positive feedback on any action Harry or himself had done, at one point even patting Tom on the shoulder. Tom didn't feel quite at ease with the Commander's touch, not after what he had witnessed last night. Not that there was anything wrong with it. It just made the image he had of the Commander not quite as solid and stable and this shook Tom. If one person could be counted on to be who he seemed, it had to be the Commander. Grabbing the most inoffensive meal he could find he rushed over to Harry and told him about the events of the night before. Harry was as equally stunned as Tom had been and equally jealous but not for the same reason. Harry had had a crush on the Maquis Captain since the first time he had seen him, dressed in his leathers. Harry had never known a man like him, good looking, commanding and confident. Despite the fact that Harry had slept with a few women, when it was one-to-one with his hand, it was the Commander taking him good and hard that had him horny and spurting with a moan, not B'Elanna's tight little body, that Tom so lusted after. Both Harry and Tom noticed the Commander enter and take a seat with the Captain, but Tom also noticed Geron jump up and march out with Ayala hot on his heels. "Look Harry see what you can find out but don't say anything. There's something going on here, I'm not sure what. I'll meet you tonight in Sandrine's." Tom set off back to the bridge. Later that night B'Elanna challenged Tom to a game of pool. She was chatty, friendly, and flirtatious even. Tom thought over what he had seen the night before, he must have misunderstood, read into it more than there was. After a couple of games Harry joined them and not long after B'Elanna made her excuses. Harry grabbed Tom by the arm and made for a booth. "What you got Har?" Tom asked excitedly. At least a bit of intrigue was a break from the tedium of this part of space. "I don't know what's going on but I did hear Ayala and Geron talking down in storage. Geron was crying and saying why did he have to finish it. He didn't say who but then Ayala said, look you know how the Captain is, you were aware of that from the start. Ayala said you knew what the deal was, you said you could handle it and then Geron said he didn't think he would get so involved." Harry relished gossip and a mystery and was flushed with the news he was imparting to Tom but also at the thought of Chakotay making love to Geron, savouring the thought for later when he was back in his cabin. Tom stared at Harry open mouthed. "You're saying that Mr Straight and Narrow was going out with Geron and finished with him and then ended up with B'Elanna. That bastard's getting more action than both of us put together." "That's what it looks like and that's not all, when Ayala had finished talking he wrapped his arms around Geron and kissed him." "You're kidding me" Tom's eyes were now as big as Harry's. "Well it wasn't a passionate kiss, it was very tender and then Ayala said we're out here along time and with some luck Geron might get another chance but ought to think of finding comfort somewhere else." "Fucking hell, Harry, what's going on." They agreed to investigate some more and meet next night to swap information. When Tom got to his room he called for the location of the Commander. The computer answered that the Commander was in his quarters. Tom asked if he was alone. The computer replied, negative. Tom held his breath as he asked who was with him. B'Elanna Torres came the reply. Tom let out his breath. "Bastard," he muttered, cursing the Commander. In the Ensign's quarters, Harry was doing the same as Tom, enquiring about the First Officer. When the computer informed him that B'Elanna Torres was with the Commander, Harry also let out his breath. "Bastard," he muttered, cursing the Klingon. The next morning, on waking up, Tom asked the same question again and received the same answer. So B'Elanna had stayed the night. Tom had a bit more information but still no answers. In the Ensign's cabin, Harry had woken up with a raging hard on and Chakotay's name on his lips. A couple of strokes, thinking of the Commander with Geron and a couple of strokes with the image of the Commander wrapping his lips around his own stiff, aching cock, brought Harry off with a moan. After a quick shower he rushed straight to the bridge. Tom turned to speak to him, "missed you at breakfast this morning." "Something came up." Harry realised what he had said, blushed at Tom and blushed even harder when his glance caught the Commander's. Tom looked at Harry, perplexed at his friend's embarrassment. During the next month no more information came to light. B'Elanna became more relaxed, to the point of easy going. She was positively blooming, which didn't go unnoticed by the rest of the crew. In fact some of the crew who had not had time for her, started to find her very appealing. The Commander was equally relaxed, joking on the bridge, giving friendly advice and comments. Tom checked the computer night and morning and B'Elanna spent every night with the Commander either in his cabin but more often in hers. Ayala and Geron spent more time together and Harry spent more time perusing the Commander but Tom, on the whole, thought things were settling back down nicely. About two month after B'Elanna and the Commander got together, Paris asked his daily question. This time the computer answered that the Commander was alone. At breakfast Tom noticed the Maquis again spending more time together and seemingly getting restless. The pilot made his way to his shift, Chakotay had the bridge and once again the big bad Commander was back. Not only was he at Tom for any slip up but also had turned on Harry for the slightest of infractions. When the end of the shift came Harry and Tom couldn't get off the bridge fast enough. "Who the fuck does he think he is, the uptight bastard." Harry couldn't get over how he'd been dressed down in front of the bridge crew for nothing, by the man of his wet dreams at that. Tom stared at Harry, it must be getting to him, he'd never known the Ensign say anything against the Commander. When they entered the mess hall Tom glanced at B'Elanna and nudged Harry, she looked terrible, the bloom, the glistening eyes had disappeared overnight.
