Author: Korey Series: TOS Part: NEW 1/1 Rating: PG Codes: K/S, Su/C, humor Summary: Everyone wonders what Spock is getting his captain for Christmas. This story was originally part of Lady Kardasi's 2003 Slash Advent Calendar, and may be archived anywhere else you like, provided my name stays with it. And telling me would be nice, if only so I can have the pleasure of seeing it on someone else's site! Uhura walked smoothly over to Spock's seat in the captain's chair, after the doors had swished shut behind the actual captain. She bent down slightly. "What are you getting the captain for Christmas?" she asked softly, as if he might still be listening. Spock looked over at her in mild surprise. "Celebrating Christmas is a human custom," he told her as if she might have forgotten. She stared at him. "Mr. Spock," she said slowly. "Are you telling me that you aren't getting your captain something for Christmas?" "That, Ms. Uhura, is not what I said at all." He might have continued, or perhaps not, but the turbolift doors slid open again to reveal McCoy, who bounced down the steps to hang on the arm of Spock's chair. "So, what'd you get Jim for Christmas?" he asked the Vulcan eagerly. Spock raised his eyes in a minor show of exasperation. "Are not Christmas presents intended to be secrets?" "Only for the person you're actually giving it to," McCoy answered promptly, as if it were some sort of question and response game. "My gift is intended for one person only," he said firmly, and wished Jim would get back to the bridge quickly. "But if you told us, it might give us some ideas of what to get him." Spock watched them curiously as the light dawned, and the pressure moved off of him and onto the other members of the crew. "You are at a loss as to what to get the captain as a gift?" "God, yes," Sulu broke in from his seat in front where he'd obviously been listening in. He turned around as McCoy snorted and Uhura smiled sheepishly. "He's just kind of... well, he has enough interests, I just can't think of anything he really needs to do them." "It's true." Chekov jumped on the bandwagon. "I haven't been able to think of a thing to get him." The others nodded, and McCoy picked up the thread of conversation. "Really, Spock. He likes his job -- he's already got a ship and crew. He likes girls -- I'm not risking my career to get him some little green tramp. He likes you -- he already has one of those. He likes chess -- he has enough sets, and a good partner. He likes working out -- he's got everything he needs to do that." Uhura nodded. "You know him better than anyone else. What does he need or want this year?" "I have come up with my gift, and did not feel it necessary to look at other possibilities. Therefore, I have devoted no more time to this topic, and do not have any suggestions for you." *And stop asking me,* he wanted to whine in a human tone. "Come on, Spock," McCoy pleaded, though he was still grinning. "You're telling me you didn't come up with second options and back up plans and devote way too much time entirely to this topic?" "At least give us your cast-off ideas," Sulu begged. "There were none," Spock replied. "My first idea is the one I am using." "Then tell us that, and we'll use it to form other plans!" "Come on, Spock, we're getting desperate here. Christmas is only a week away!" Could it be true that for once he was succeeding at a human custom where the humans themselves had failed? "I feel certain you would not be able to use my gift idea to plan your own." "Then we'll copy you!" McCoy said desperately. "Can't have too much of a good thing, and you're pretty sure he'll like your idea, right?" Spock very nearly smiled in amusement. "Trust me, doctor, you will not wish to duplicate my gift." His face stayed as straight as ever, voice deadpan. "But Mister--" the Russian started, only to look over in surprise at the hand Sulu laid suddenly, gently, on his arm, while smiling knowingly. He stared in confusion, and then smiled back, slowly. "Oh." He looked back at Spock, and then back at Sulu, and then crossed his arms, the smile disappearing. "Well, there goes my only resource." Uhura, too, pouted when she understood the glances. "Spock, that's just not fair. You should at least come up with ideas for us to use, if yours is going to be so individualized." "What are you all going on about?" McCoy asked in frustration, looking around the group. His eye fell on the navigator and weapons control officer, still touching, and then back at Spock, who met the doctor's eyes with one eyebrow raised. "Oh for God's sake," he said in sudden complete annoyed understanding. "Do you two ever think of anything else?" Spock had the state of mind to look indignant. "Certainly. The proof of that should be this well run ship and crew, of which we--" "When you're off-duty, Spock?" "On occasion." McCoy shook his head. "You know, Spock, you should really think of others when you're planning your Christmas gifts. Now I still don't know what to get him." He turned and walked off the bridge. Chekov sulked, turning back around. "Thanks for nothing." Uhura just gave him a disapproving look. "You're supposed to help us with these things." Spock glanced at them all in the Vulcan version of astonishment, which meant that one eyebrow was slightly raised. His gaze fell on Sulu, who was still looking at him, smiling. "Mr. Sulu?" he asked, waiting for ill humor from the junior officer. Sulu threw a sideways glance at the weapons officer leaning over his board next to him. "Thanks," he whispered. He mouthed the last part so that Chekov wouldn't hear him. "At least you gave me an idea for Christmas." *fin* ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ ASCEM messages are copied to a mailing list.
