FYI, if you're wondering who the heck these people are, Sonya Gomez was in Engineering in several TNG episodes, and Tess Allenby was at the helm in all of two (with memorable lines like "Yes, sir," and "Course plotted, sir"), though her appearances came after Sonya's. I finally decided to give them a story of their own. I wish it were happier. If anything, this could explain what happened to Gomez after her short stay. Summary: Ensign Gomez faces the consequences of a moment of bad Conduct Unbecoming by longbeachtrekstar, August 2004 Ensign Gomez sat on the bench inside her detention cell on Starbase 24. Her feet were flat on the floor, her arms were folded across her thighs, and her head was down. Her eyes were red and puffy from hours of crying, but they were dry now -- she had no more tears left. She was exhausted from lack of sleep, perhaps due to the constant glow and ever-present hum of the detention screen, but more probably because of the torturous thoughts going round and round her head. She was currently the only prisoner in the block of a dozen cells. A lone security guard sat at his station at one end of the corridor, just in front of a secondary force-field which led to the main hall and more guards beyond. He lowered the screen at the approach of a Starfleet officer -- a female in a red "command" uniform. She might be considered just barely middle-aged, with short auburn hair and a lawyer's self-centered confidence. She approached Gomez's cell, and with a nod from her, the guard lowered the screen. Gomez looked up only briefly with a vacant stare before lowering her head again. The visitor stepped inside, and the force-field buzzed back into place. She looked at the fragile young girl before her and briefly considered the absurdity of the high-tech force-fields and armed guards around her. This prisoner was clearly no threat. But procedure was procedure, and the veteran lawyer had long ago ceased wondering about such things. She looked down at the young woman before her. "Ensign Gomez. I'm Captain Phillipa Louvois. I've been assigned by Starfleet Command to act as your counsel in this matter." The girl did not look up. "Ensign Gomez..." She put her hand on the girl's shoulder. "Sonya..." The ensign looked up. "The only way I can help you is if you let me. The charges against you are serious. Conduct unbecoming a Starfleet officer... dereliction of duty... manslaughter! You have to tell me what happened." "What is there to say? I'm guilty." ***** The crowd around the small table in Ten Forward broke into peals of laughter. Chief Engineer LaForge had invited Gomez and two other engineering crewmembers to have some drinks after their shift. Commander Riker and Counselor Troi had happened by, and now all six of them crowded around the small table. There was a larger empty table nearby, and Sonya considered suggesting that they move to it, but that would have destroyed the intimacy of their little gathering, and -- perhaps more importantly -- the spontaneity. Geordi had just finished telling the infamous "hot cocoa" story. Everyone had heard it before, but it never failed to get a laugh -- at Sonya's good-natured expense. Just then, Sonya noticed a young ensign enter the lounge and look around apprehensively. She finally settled on an empty stool at the far end of the bar. Sonya emptied the last bit of drink in her glass and got up. "Anybody need anything?" There was a unanimous murmur of "no, thanks" as she took her empty glass to the bar, sidling up next to the blonde newcomer. "Trachian Ale," she said to the bartender. Turning to the ensign, she introduced herself. "Hi, I'm Ensign Gomez... Sonya." The girl smiled, seemingly relieved to have someone to talk to. "Tess... Ensign Tess Allenby." "New on board? I don't think I've seen you before." "No. I mean yes, I'm new. I arrived last week." "And you just found Ten Forward?" teased Sonya. "I think I was in here my first night. Would you care to sit with us?" She gestured toward her table. "No, thank you. I think I'll just finish this and call it a night." "Suit yourself. Hey, maybe we can get together sometime, and I'll show you around." "Thanks. That'd be great." ***** "Sonya, another counselor is getting Ensign Allenby's statement. I'm here to get *your* side of the story." "There's no *side* to the story. What happened, happened. You must realize, it wasn't Tess's fault. I was completely respon-" "Stop worrying about Tess. I'm here to help *you*." "Then please. Listen." ***** Sonya paused outside the door to Tess's quarters, butterflies having their way inside her stomach. All she had to do was push the buzzer. She supposed that this would be their first actual date. If so, she didn't know what to call what they'd already shared. A late night cup of coffee after shift. Lunch a few days later. Even a stolen kiss in the corner of Ten Forward. For everyone to see! If anyone had happened to look their way. Which they hadn't. And tonight was dinner. And a walk in the arboretum. If anything said "date", then this did... She still hadn't pushed the buzzer. Sonya took a deep breath. Then another one, making a silent note to herself to "be cool". Then she pushed the button. A moment later, the door slid open, and Sonya was staring into the softest, doe-iest eyes she'd ever seen. Tess smiled nervously. Sonya took in her long hair -- usually worn up, it was wet and hanging down behind her shoulders. And she was wrapped in only a towel. For her part, Tess was absolutely flustered. "Uh... Hi!... I'm, uh, running a bit behind." She self-consciously readjusted her towel. "Yeah... uh, sure... I can just... I could come back..." "No!... I mean, why don't you..." Tess stood back from the doorway and gestured Sonya in. "Um... 'kay... thanks..." Sonya lurched awkwardly into the room, as if she were operating her legs by remote control. "I'll be ready in a few minutes. Why don't you help yourself to a drink." Tess made to walk off, but hesitated. Sonya approached the replicator. "Two Calaman sherries." She took the two glasses and handed one to Tess, who had not yet moved off to get ready. "No roommate tonight?" "No, McKnight just went on duty an hour ago. And you can't tell her about this! She's quite emphatic about the fact that she is *not that way*." Tess made a sarcastic noise, sucking her teeth. "She wishes! She couldn't get laid in a freshman dorm -- girls' or guys'." Sonya smiled. Tess's expression grew concerned. "Anyway, please. This has to be just between you and me." Sonya waved a dismissive hand. "No problem, don't worry." She smiled at Tess. "You look good like that -- your hair down, I mean. And I love wet hair. It's... sexy." Tess blushed and toyed with the edge of her towel. "I suppose I should get ready. It's not as if I can go out with wet hair." Sonya smiled and took Tess's hand. "I suppose we could stay in." She leaned in, and the two shared their second kiss. No one was watching this time, either. They did not make it out that night. A few hours after Sonya had arrived, they finally got around to dinner from the replicator, followed by snuggling on the sofa. They were both fully dressed again. They already felt a bit scandalized by their romantic abandon - - casually lounging about in the nude was more than they could endure. Tess put her glass of sherry aside. "I'm afraid I have some bad news. Well, it's not all bad, but... I'll be taking a training class on the new LCARS system at Starbase 14. I have to leave in two days, and I'll be gone for about a month." "Oh, no! You have second shift tomorrow, and I have third shift." "Then we'll just have to get together *after* your shift. We'll have a few hours then, before I leave. Until then, we'll just have to make tonight count." Tess leaned in for another kiss. ***** "Engineering, Sonya! Tell me what happened in Engineering!" "I *will*! But you needed to know what happened before then. You have to understand..." Sonya looked pleadingly at Louvois, but the lawyer was unmoved. Sonya sighed. "Okay, Engineering... I was the officer in charge of Gamma Shift -- midnight to zero-eight-hundred-hours. It was my first time in charge, and Commander LaForge had just finished giving me my shift briefing." ***** "We're in the middle of a plasma-flux diagnostic. I'd wanted to finish it on my shift, but we're running a few hours behind. It shouldn't be a problem, though. Just keep an eye on the plasma flow through the main conduits. If any of the readings start to yellow- line, close the valves till you get it back into the green. Understand?" "Yes, sir." "If you have any questions or problems, don't be afraid to call me." Gomez smiled. "I'll be fine." LaForge turned to Crewmen Johnson and DesJardins. "See that this Ensign doesn't blow up the ship on her first shift-command," he joked. They all chuckled. "Good night," announced Geordi as he left Engineering. "Well, Ensign," said Johnson with a smirk. "Welcome to the graveyard shift." For several hours, the shift passed uneventfully. Around 0300, Johnson approached Gomez by the main console. "Ensign, mind if I knock off for lunch?" Gomez looked around. "Where's DesJardins?" "Jefferies Tube Eleven, degaussing a junction box that'd built up some static. He should be back in a few." "Well, okay. Go ahead." "Nothing like getting lunch at three o'clock in the morning," joked Johnson as he left, the doors to Engineering sliding closed behind him with a soft whoosh. Sonya returned her full attention to the monitors before her. A few minutes later, she heard the doors slide open again and assumed that DesJardins had just returned. Suddenly, someone grabbed her ass with both hands, laughing giddily. "Hey!" Sonya jumped straight up. Whirling, she came face to face with Ensign Allenby. She smiled and laughed, though she was still stunned by the assault. "Dammit, girl! What's wrong with you." "I wanted to come by and surprise you." "Well, you sure did! Shouldn't you be packing? I don't want anything taking away from the short time we'll have when I'm done here." Tess bit her lip and smiled ruefully. "That's why I'm here. The transport arrived early, and I have to leave in just a few hours." "Oh, no. You mean this is good-bye?" Tess's rueful smile grew mischievous. "It doesn't have to be." She looked around quickly and, seeing that the coast was clear, playfully started grabbing at Sonya about her crotch. "C'mon. Let's have one more go!" Sonya fended off her assault, shushing her as if they were in a library. "Stop that. Don't be ridiculous." "Sonya, I'm not kidding. This is it for us -- for a whole month!" "I can't leave Engineering unoccupied. And even if it wasn't, I'm in charge. I couldn't leave to... to..." "To get a quickie? C'mon. Couldn't you, I don't know, check on something in one of the Jefferies tubes... somewhere no one could see..." "Well..." Sonya began to weaken. "DesJardins should be back any time now... Okay! But let's be quick about it!" "Kinky girl!" The two girls entered a Jefferies tube which originated in Engineering and branched out at a forty-five degree angle. A dozen meters up, it intersected with a horizontal tube. Proceeding a few meters more, the girls halted and turned to each other, their passion stoked by the excitement of an illicit rendezvous. They wasted no time on sweet nothings -- time was of the essence. They embraced and came together in a passionate kiss. Tongues were engaged, and Tess could not help herself as giggles overcame her. Zippers were lowered and breasts bared. Total nudity, however, proved troublesome, as neither had taken the time to remove her boots, and the pants did not pass easily over them. In less time than it felt like to them, however, the two were naked. Wrapped in each others' arms and legs, they engaged in the wild abandon known only to youth, or those young at heart. Youthful orgasms were quick and plentiful, and soon the action slowed. Sonya was ever mindful of the need to return soon to the Engine Room. She rested her head on Tess's belly and sighed. "I'm gonna miss you, Tessy." Tess reached down to toy with Sonya's hair. "Me, too. But it won't be forever. I'll be back in... what's that sound?" A loud buzzing had suddenly started. Sonya raised her head to listen more carefully. "Is it a red alert?" asked Tess fearfully, clutching her discarded uniform to her naked chest, as if to protect her from the unknown danger. "No, a red alert doesn't sound like... JesusFuckinChrist! That's a reactor alarm!" Sonya threw her uniform on in record time, leaving her boots behind as she flew back down the crawlspace they had come up. Reaching the first junction, she climbed down the ladder so fast, she nearly fell. If the alarm was loud in the Jefferies tube, it was positively ear-splitting in Engineering itself. She looked at the main display. It was a Christmas tree of flashing orange and red warning lights. "Oh God! ... OhGodOhGodOhGod!" The flux inhibitor for the plasma flow had failed, and super-hot plasma was spewing unchecked through the main conduits from the warp core to the nacelles. She looked around. The room was empty. If she'd been at her station, she could have shut off the flow at the first sign of trouble. Now, it was too late. Crewman DesJardins came flying back into the room. "What the hell's going on?" "The plasma flow is out of control!" "We've got to close the valve in the main plasma shaft!" He threw open an access panel to a crawlspace which paralleled the main plasma conduit. "No!" screamed Gomez. "Come back! It's too late for that!" ***** Sonya rubbed her eyes with the palms of her hands. "The alarms were so loud... And ten different people were yelling at me over the intercom... Captain Picard, Geordi... I couldn't think!" "Why did you tell DesJardins to stop?" "What?" "Crewman DesJardins. He was going to turn something off." "Yeah. The main plasma valve. But that wouldn't work." "Why not?" "Because... What's it matter now?" "Everything matters, Sonya. Tell me." "Because the plasma stream was already over eighty thousand degrees. There's a duranium ring inside the valve that melts at seventy-two thousand degrees, making it inoperative. You've got to shut the flow down from the core itself." "Didn't he know that?" "Sure... I mean, I suppose... He was scared. We all were." "Then what happened?" "Johnson was back, and a few others showed up to try to help as well. I almost had the reactor valve closed, but the flow had passed one- hundred-thousand degrees. The conduit failed... it exploded... ki- killing DesJardins..." "Go on." "The fire-suppression system kicked in, but the entire compartment was flooded with anti-matter radiation. The emergency bulkhead started to close, so I ordered everyone out." "But you didn't leave." "I had to shut off the flow, or the whole ship could go up." "So you stayed... In a room flooded with radiation and burning out of control, you stayed." "Well, I... yeah." "By the time emergency teams reached you, you were unconscious. It's a miracle you survived. But you saved the ship." "Saved it? I nearly blew it up!" "That's right, you did. And you'll have to answer for that. But I don't think manslaughter will be one of the charges. DesJardins disobeyed you and went where he shouldn't have. You did everything you could." Sonya's gaze returned to the floor of her cell. "It wasn't enough... It wasn't enough..."
