Yet another story=20 which has been inspired by my interaction with certain fan=20 factions on the net. ;-) Written for the Die J/C Die contest 2004: http://www.geocities.com/thespiritwalk/jc.html ------------------------------------------------------------=20 Seven of Nine walked down the narrow pebbled pathway to the=20 entrance of the small sea-side bistro. Intimately situated=20 on the dock behind a grove of beautiful palm trees along the=20 Wharf, their long fronds swaying lazily in the light breeze,=20 the small eatery was what she suspected Chakotay would call=20 'cozy'.=20 Since their return to Earth five weeks ago, she'd found the=20 former Voyager First Officer firmly committed to keeping his=20 side of the bargain. As promised, he had stayed within=20 transporter distance at all times, and had been helping her=20 adapt to various Terran cultures and people, along with=20 their cuisines. Their relationship was new and she sometimes=20 felt a glimmer of unease when trying out these new human=20 experiences, but the activities they had indulged in had=20 been enjoyable nonetheless. Especially after the grueling=20 debriefing sessions they had gone through with Starfleet in=20 the first three weeks of their arrival, visiting a new=20 eating-place every night, tasting local fare from all=20 corners of the world, seemed like a reaffirmation of their=20 newfound freedom.=20 She realized that when unencumbered by Starfleet rules and=20 regulations, Chakotay was very good company to be around. He=20 was an intelligent and cultured man, possessing an appealing=20 personality, a wry sense of humor which was not unlike her=20 own, as well as a physical allure that was especially=20 distracting. He did not stifle her with demands, simply=20 exposed her to new experiences and kept a caring, interested=20 eye on her reactions.=20 Seven had even found those informal at-home meals they'd=20 prepared together, away from the hustle and bustle of the=20 city, to be most enjoyable. She was still finding it=20 difficult getting used to having the whole of humanity=20 surrounding her on Earth, and it was nice to have Chakotay=20 close by. They had not taken their relationship to the=20 intimate level yet, but she found herself getting closer to=20 him with each passing day. She could feel that the time was=20 not far when they would take that next step together, and=20 she often wondered how it would be to actually be loved by=20 Chakotay on that physical level.=20 However, it wasn't Chakotay she was meeting at the bistro=20 today. He had been called away for a meeting the previous=20 night, something related to his upcoming new position at=20 Starfleet Archeology Wing, and she knew he wouldn't be back=20 until later this evening.=20 The invitation to meet for drinks was from her former mentor=20 Captain Kathryn Janeway. Seven had to admit she had been=20 somewhat surprised at the unexpected communiqu=E9. Ever since=20 their return to the Alpha Quadrant, the former Voyager=20 captain had been kept busy in meetings with the Starfleet=20 brass-first it had been the crew debriefings and then top=20 level confidential meetings that were apparently for her=20 eyes only. For weeks the captain had been completely out of=20 contact with her former crew. Not even Chakotay could get=20 through to her. Rumor had it there was a promotion in the=20 line.=20 Thus when the invitation came, Seven accepted it without any=20 questions. It had been a few weeks since she had last seen=20 the captain and she felt it would be nice to talk to her now=20 that they were all getting settled. Maybe she could discuss=20 the new Stellar Cartography position offer she had received=20 recently. Kathryn Janeway was after all a close friend.=20 The day was chilly and Seven had chosen her attire=20 accordingly-a deep blue sleeveless blouse on top of which=20 she wore a warm jacket, and a slim pair of pants of a darker=20 shade, cut close to her body, all made of a warm textured=20 material. As she approached the large glass doors of the=20 eatery, she readjusted the clip that held her hair together=20 and then opened the doors and stepped inside the=20 establishment.=20 The inside ambience was dimmed, centrally-heated, and turned=20 intimate with the only light coming from the elegant wall=20 sconces and the candlelight stands on the small round=20 tables. The main hall was partially filled with people=20 sitting around the tables and the elegantly applied d=E9cor=20 hinted at a mid-century French setting. At the center of the=20 room was a man sitting at a large period piano, playing a=20 vaguely familiar tune. Seven stood still at the entrance,=20 letting her eyes adjust to the dimmed light as she looked=20 through the crowd, trying to find Kathryn Janeway's familiar=20 visage.=20 Soon a man whom she assumed was the ma=EEtre d' approached=20 her.=20 "Madame Hansen?" he asked her.=20 She nodded.=20 "Ah, Madame Katrine is waiting for you." He smiled. "Let me=20 guide you to her special private enclave."=20 Trying to ignore the curious glances of the patrons present=20 in the main hall, Seven followed the ma=EEtre d' as he weaved=20 his way between the tables and led her into the inner=20 chambers. For a moment, as she looked at the individuals=20 softly whispering together in the muted shadowy=20 surroundings, she felt herself frown at the choice of the=20 venue. This was obviously a romantic location, a place with=20 an intimate setting for couples to gather at and celebrate=20 their union. She couldn't understand why the captain had=20 chosen this as a place for their evening drink.=20 But then the ma=EEtre d' was parting the curtains that=20 separated an inside alcove from the rest of the hall and she=20 stepped in to face her friend.=20 "Seven!" The captain stood up from behind the private table=20 she was sitting at and with a start Seven realized she was=20 wearing a shimmering black evening dress. "It's so good to=20 see you." The captain walked up to her and with a beaming=20 smile, wrapped Seven in a close hug, tightening her arms=20 around her frame.=20 Feeling suddenly awkward, for she had never before hugged=20 her captain, Seven weakly returned the embrace. "Captain,"=20 she forced herself to reply. "It is good to see you too."=20 "Mmm... you feel good," she felt the captain's hot breath=20 puff against her neck, and for some inexplicable reason felt=20 herself stiffen at the contact, as a strange feeling of=20 unease settled into her senses. However, before she could=20 contemplate the reason for that unease, the captain had=20 unwrapped her arms from around her and was looking into her=20 eyes. "And you look lovely even if you aren't quite dressed=20 for the venue." With a wink, the captain gripped her hands=20 firmly and led her to the table.=20 "I didn't realize there was a special occasion," Seven said=20 as she took her jacket off and settled into her seat,=20 watching as the older woman took the seat across from her.=20 "Oh, I was sort of counting on your thoroughness to do=20 proper research before embarking on a new project, or=20 meeting." Janeway smiled slyly. "Unfortunately it seems the=20 company you're currently keeping isn't stimulating enough=20 for you." The older woman's tone sounded a bit brittle.=20 "Your senses seem to have dulled a bit."=20 The retort seemed out of place, almost clumsy in its=20 execution, and Seven felt herself frown in puzzlement at the=20 choice of words. However, before she could question the=20 captain on her thoughts, the other woman signaled the ma=EEtre=20 d' and the moment was pushed back as the man brought a=20 bottle of wine and filled their glasses.=20 "Chateau La Lisanne," The captain picked up her tall flute=20 and took a long appreciative swallow. "2314 vintage=20 collection. Not synthehol." She looked at Seven=20 speculatively from over the glass. "It's the real thing."=20 With a sigh, Seven picked up the glass. "Real alcohol=20 doesn't seem to agree with me either, but I will have this=20 drink."=20 "Good for you," the captain drawled. "It's time you tasted=20 the finer things humanity has to offer you."=20 As Seven carefully sipped the wine, she found the taste to=20 be fruitier than she preferred but stayed quiet. If she had=20 to indulge in an undesirable activity, keeping her=20 indifference intact would be helpful.=20 Instead she contemplated the woman sitting in front of her.=20 For reasons Seven couldn't explain, she found herself=20 suddenly feeling uncertain about coming here and meeting=20 Janeway. She could not exactly pinpoint the source of her=20 disquiet but it existed nonetheless, and had nagged her from=20 the moment she'd stepped into the restaurant and come into=20 this private enclosure to meet the captain.=20 However, disquiet was irrelevant and it would be best to=20 disregard it for the duration of the meeting.=20 With that decision made, Seven looked up at the captain. "I=20 heard about your imminent promotion," she said.=20 "Congratulations."=20 "Thank you." Janeway smiled. "It was a long time in coming.=20 Starfleet has no choice but to honor the treasured few=20 officers that are left after the Dominion war. They don't=20 get many captains bringing their ships back home from=20 seventy thousand light years away."=20 Seven nodded. "Your credentials are indisputable."=20 "So they are." The look in the captain's eyes was=20 speculative as she stared at Seven. "Tell me, what have you=20 been up to lately?"=20 "I have an offer for a supervisory position at Stellar=20 Cartography's Technology Diversification Center," Seven=20 replied. "It is an appealing proposal."=20 "Technology Diversification." The captain took another sip.=20 "It's the department affiliated with the Interstellar=20 Cultural Diversity Institute at the Archeology Wing, isn't=20 it?"=20 Seven raised a brow in acknowledgement. "That is correct.=20 The two departments conduct research work together to find=20 links between historical evidence of technological=20 civilizations throughout the quadrant."=20 "That is just one of the offers." Janeway refilled the flute=20 from the bottle of wine. "As you know you now have friends=20 in higher places, you can have many other opportunities.=20 Much better ones."=20 "Perhaps." Seven shrugged. "However, for now this seems to=20 be the most intriguing among the other offers I've=20 received."=20 "Oh, don't be so sure." Janeway lifted a shoulder in what=20 appeared to be a coy gesture, before giving Seven a crooked=20 smile. "I think I have something better for you."=20 Seven's curiosity was piqued. "You do?"=20 "Multi-cultural institute at the University of Indiana."=20 Janeway looked into Seven's eyes, as a smile widened on her=20 face. "They have a fascinating vacancy for the position of a=20 Professor of Inter-Galactic-Terran Cultural Research. Just=20 your kind of work."=20 Seven stared at the captain in puzzlement. "A professorship.=20 I am not a teacher."=20 "I beg to differ." The look on the captain's face hardened.=20 It was the same expression Janeway had adopted many times on=20 Voyager when she was trying to convince Seven of an idea she=20 didn't particularly approve of. "I think you could be a=20 wonderful teacher. And it's a position that is at once that=20 of teacher and of student." The pale gray eyes stared hard=20 into Seven's as the captain spoke, every word precise-chewed=20 for effectiveness. "It's a study of humanity, Seven. You=20 will learn so much at this locality, and the faculty is=20 fabulous. I've spoken to the dean personally and they're all=20 looking very forward to meeting with you. With your Borg=20 knowledge of the diverse civilizations you came across, you=20 could bring so much to this research."=20 It almost sounded like the captain had made the decision and=20 was now expecting Seven to accept it without question.=20 Feeling a frown forming between her brows, Seven put the=20 flute down and looked into her former mentor's eyes. "It's a=20 planet bound position. I am not ready for a position that=20 will keep me indefinitely on Earth."=20 "Earth is where it's at, Seven." Janeway looked annoyed.=20 "You're a human. You belong on Earth."=20 "But Chakotay doesn't want to stay on Earth indefinitely,"=20 Seven replied.=20 There was a pause as something that looked like distaste=20 passed the captain's face. And then she continued, her voice=20 colder. "I am telling you this for your own good, Seven.=20 When have I ever done anything that wasn't for your benefit?=20 This appointment will keep you close to home, will give you=20 the chance to interact with humanity on a level you never=20 got to face before."=20 "But if Chakotay's appointment at the Archeology Wing works=20 out, my work at the Stellar Cartography position will be=20 that much more significant..."=20 "Forget Chakotay!" Janeway growled.=20 "Captain!" Seven stared at the older woman in shock.=20 "Your involvement with him hasn't been long enough to be=20 that hard to break off." The look on Janeway's face was that=20 of resentment. "I am asking you for this, Seven. Me,=20 Kathryn, who has given you so much. Now it's time for you to=20 return the favor."=20 Seven felt flabbergasted. She couldn't understand what was=20 going on? Had Chakotay been wrong when he'd said the captain=20 did not harbor romantic feelings towards him? Was she going=20 to try and take him away from Seven now?=20 "I don't understand." She stared at her former captain. "You=20 have always encouraged me to make my own decisions. I have=20 decided to choose a career that will keep me close to=20 Chakotay. I don't see why you would disapprove."=20 For some reason Janeway looked sad. A longing wistful look=20 came on her face as she sighed. "Do you have any idea what=20 is the *real* reason I called you here, Seven?"=20 "I do not," Seven replied. She wasn't even sure she wanted=20 to know anymore. But it didn't seem she had a choice. "I=20 thought since we are friends, there didn't have to be a=20 predetermined motive for us to socialize together." She=20 straightened her shoulders as if readying herself. "But in=20 case there is... please state your reasons for inviting me."=20 "I called you here, Seven, because I wanted to discuss=20 this... *thing* you have going... with Chakotay." The older=20 woman's voice dripped with bitterness.=20 Seven felt confounded yet again at the choice of words and=20 the tone. Why would Captain Janeway deliberately try to bait=20 her, or to put Chakotay down? Weren't they friends? "I=20 thought you wanted to discuss my career options."=20 "Sarcastic, are we?" Janeway sniffed. "I can see you're=20 already getting his bad habits."=20 Seven breathed deeply to get her emotions in control. Losing=20 restraint would be inefficient at this point. "Very well."=20 She nodded. "We'll discuss Chakotay. However I do not see=20 why my affiliation with Chakotay would trouble you now. You=20 have not said a word about our interaction for the past five=20 weeks. I had assumed you'd moved past any emotional=20 entanglements to your life on Voyager. Chakotay too had=20 assured me that nothing had ever happened between the two of=20 you and that you had never shown any interest in his=20 propositions."=20 "I never did." Kathryn Janeway lifted her chin. "And he's=20 right. Nothing ever happened between the two of us."=20 Seven frowned. "Then why did you bring up the subject?"=20 "You misunderstood me, Seven." There was something in the=20 gray eyes that Seven couldn't quite recognize, making her=20 uncomfortable. "I didn't call you here to discuss Chakotay.=20 I wanted to talk about *you*."=20 "Me." Seven stared at Janeway.=20 "I know its been a hectic few weeks for you, Seven." Janeway=20 softened her tone. "It's been a busy time for all of us. So=20 many new assignments, so many new adjustments to make." A=20 smile appeared at one corner of her mouth. "But I can make=20 it easy for you, you know."=20 "How?" Seven asked, waiting.=20 Janeway swallowed as she looked at Seven, that same=20 wistfulness in her eyes. "Oh, I've wanted to say this to you=20 for so long, Seven. On Voyager things were different. We had=20 rules and regulations. We had protocols to follow." Her eyes=20 had a strange glassiness to them. "But life here is=20 different now. I am soon to get a desk job and I can finally=20 relax and spend my life in the luxury I've earned after so=20 many years of service, with my chosen companion of course."=20 Seven stared at her. "I don't understand. How does that=20 involve me or Chakotay?"=20 "It *doesn't* involve Chakotay." Janeway sounded impatient.=20 "It never has. I am talking about *you*."=20 Seven felt a sense of dread descend. "I don't understand..."=20 "Here... maybe this will help." Janeway took out what=20 appeared to be a pair of data chips from under the table.=20 She set them on the linen-covered surface and pushed them=20 towards Seven.=20 Seven studied the objects. "These are tickets to... a beach=20 resort holiday package in... Phuket."=20 "Yes, such a beautiful place." A dreamy look came on=20 Janeway's face. "See the names on the tickets?"=20 Seven looked up from the chips. "You have booked tickets in=20 your name and mine. Why?"=20 "It was about time you got a clue, Seven." Janeway looked=20 amused as she reached out and put her hand on Seven's. "For=20 such a smart woman, sometime you can be so slow on the=20 uptake."=20 "I don't understand," Seven repeated, even though a part of=20 her did understand. Perhaps, a bigger part of her was still=20 hoping this was all a bad dream. She looked down at the=20 captain's hand covering hers and tried not to yank her arm=20 out.=20 "Well, understand this." Janeway looked into Seven's eyes.=20 "The reason Chakotay and I never got together on Voyager was=20 because I wasn't interested in him. He isn't my type. No *man*=20 can ever be my type."=20 Seven pressed her lips together as she finally extracted her=20 hand from under the captain's and ignored the frown that=20 appeared on Janeway's face at this. "Are you saying you=20 prefer homosexual relationships?"=20 "I always have." Janeway stared at her. "Women understand=20 each other so much better, Seven, better than men ever=20 could."=20 Seven shook her head, still feeling dazed. "But no one on=20 the ship ever knew..."=20 "You think I am going to advertise my sexual orientation to=20 my *crew*?" Janeway chuckled. "You think I am going to=20 advertise my feelings about who I can love?" The same=20 wistfulness appeared in the pale eyes. "About how I feel for=20 you?"=20 Seven stared at her mentor, feeling her breath catching in=20 her throat. "You are interested in a sexual relationship=20 with me."=20 "Think of it, Seven." Janeway's nostrils flared as she=20 stared longingly at Seven. "My ultimate femininity...=20 combined with your conflicted androgynous nature, which of=20 course is utterly captivating even with all its flaws..."=20 Her smile turned tender. "We could be quite a match, you=20 know, you have so much to explore in your life..."=20 Seven, however, missed the smile and the tenderness. "My=20 conflicted *androgynous* nature?" she asked, feeling the=20 disquiet replace by a new emotion: annoyance.=20 "Your duality, Seven." Janeway shrugged. "The technological=20 beast within the fledgling human being." The words rolled=20 off her tongue in that same familiar clipped tone. "The=20 challenge of taming that beast, of teaching it humanity,=20 your ultimate struggle with your inner demons. That is what=20 I always found so delightful about you. The dichotomy within=20 your soul. I have so much to teach you, Seven."=20 "I think you have taught me more than enough." Seven's voice=20 turned cold.=20 But Janeway didn't notice. "Not nearly as much as I'd like=20 to. I have so many plans for you, Seven." She smiled. "I've=20 already found the perfect dream house for us. I told you how=20 much I missed Indiana, didn't I? Now I have a chance to show=20 you Indiana, show you the delights of the world as I know=20 it, there's so much you haven't seen, there's so much you=20 have to learn."=20 "And you made all these plans about... our future=20 together... without consulting me." Seven looked sharply at=20 Janeway. "Did you stop to think of my relationship with=20 Chakotay?"=20 "Chakotay has a *history* of pining after women he can't get."=20 The captain snorted. "Really, the man is a disaster waiting=20 to happen. He is always at his best when left hanging on a=20 string. He could never give you what you really need, Seven.=20 He doesn't understand you the way I do. He doesn't have the=20 capacity to love you the way I want to love you. I've wanted=20 you for so *long*, Seven."=20 "Did you stop to think I may not *agree* with your assessment=20 of Chakotay?"=20 "Seven," Janeway snapped. "Chakotay may have a way with=20 words and I suspect he has woven a web of deceit around you=20 to confuse your vulnerable sentiments, but the truth is he's=20 a failure as far as his personal life is concerned.=20 Everything he touches turns to dust. He started his=20 Starfleet career and watched his family get slaughtered by=20 the Cardassians and let that go down the drain. He joined=20 the Maquis, got himself thrown into the Delta Quadrant, got=20 his ship destroyed and then came crawling to me to let him=20 and his crew join Voyager. Really, I can't honestly see what=20 you see in him."=20 Seven couldn't help but clench her jaw as she spoke. "Is=20 that your ultimate femininity speaking or the part that has=20 *pined* after me for so long?"=20 "Really, that is no way to talk to your former captain,=20 Seven." Janeway snarled.=20 "And is that a way to talk about the man who considers you=20 his best friend?"=20 "I had to keep a front on the ship," Janeway replied. "And=20 the best way was to show the crew that Chakotay and I got=20 along well. The truth is... with his stubborn nature, there=20 was no way I could've ever..."=20 Seven interrupted her. "...considered him a friend, yes, I=20 am getting the picture. You don't make friends, you make=20 slaves. You have gotten so used to controlling everyone's=20 lives, you've forgotten what it means to allow personal=20 freedom to those who serve under you. And you've hidden and=20 repressed your sexual orientation for so long, the=20 overwhelming frustration has affected your better judgment."=20 The captain's face turned red with anger. "What the hell are=20 you..."=20 Again Seven cut her off in the middle. "I am sorry you feel=20 the way you do about Chakotay. He always had such high=20 regards for you. And for your information, what he felt for=20 you was nothing more than a passing infatuation, brought on=20 at a time he thought he was stuck on a planet with you for=20 the rest of his life. Truth is... he got over that=20 infatuation soon enough when he realized you were not=20 interested in him. He didn't pine after you nearly as long=20 as you'd like to think..."=20 "Seven..."=20 "...and I am even sorrier that you feel the way you do about=20 *me*. Because I've considered you a friend, a mentor, possibly=20 a family member, but there has never been anything beyond=20 that." Seven stared hard at the woman she had once treasured=20 unreservedly. "I thought you had more respect for me than=20 thinking of me as nothing more than a reclamation object=20 that you felt the need to acquire and shape in your image. I=20 am sorry you have these feelings for me because I do not=20 return them. I never have. I never will."=20 "Seven..."=20 "Thank you for the drink, Captain." Seven pulled back the=20 chair and stood up. "I am quite happy exploring my life with=20 Chakotay. I shall give him your regards."=20 With that Seven of Nine turned around and walked out of the=20 alcove, out of the restaurant, and out of Kathryn Janeway's=20 life.=20 #=20 # =20 Continued in 2/2 =09=09 --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!?
