Title: "It Is Done" Author: Neroon Contact: thesatai@adelphia.net Series: None Rating: PG Paarts: 1/1 Codes: K/S, AR, major character death Summary: When a tragedy strikes on Vulcan, Mr. Spock returns to deal Spock slowly walked into the room where the video screen sat. Lowering himself into the chair, he acknowledged the light that was blinking, signifying an incoming transmission. In the nearly 6 weeks that he had been on Vulcan, he had received only one such message and that had been from his bondmate, James Kirk. Knowing his former Captain's impatience, it seemed most likely that this message would be from the same source. Turning on the screen, he was not surprised to see the familiar face of the man, who had been at the center of his world for over two decades. The face was much the same as it had been that day so long ago when Kirk had taken over the Enterprise although it had filled out with time and the lines were pronounced. As a point of vanity Kirk still continued to color his hair, saying that he couldn't expect young upstarts to follow an old man. Old man? Spock had never been able to convince his lover that he would be loved no matter how many grey hairs accumulated. "Spock?" The hint of a smile formed at Kirk's lips. "How is your mother doing?" "She is resting comfortably,Jim" Not a lie exactly, but who knew if it was the truth? "Good, good to hear that. I know this is not the best time to bring this up, but I haven't heard from you in awhile and I wondered if you'd given anymore consideration to...to what we discussed before you were departed for Vulcan?" "You are referring to the breaking of our bond, of course?" Spock's voice shook only slightly. "Yes, I am," Kirk conceded. "Have you decided whether you will agree to it?" Shivering under his robe, Spock nodded and then announced, "I have already discussed the matter with a healer. It will be attended to later today." "How...how will I know that it is dissolved?" Jim asked. "It will be apparent almost from the moment it is done. You might feel some discomfort, but I believe it will be shortlived." "Very well. Thank you, Spock. I...I am sorry that it has...." "Do not concern yourself, Jim. It has become readily apparent that a mistake was made. I shall remain here on Vulcan for a time. Live long and prosper, James T. Kirk." The screen went blank at the flick of the switch by Spock. Carefully, he forced himself from the chair. He had promised Jim Kirk he would see the healer this very day and even the fact that his mother had died scarcely an hour before would not stop him from keeping the promise. Sometime later that day, Kirk sat at his desk working on paperwork. As an admiral in Starfleet, such paperwork was routine, but the legendary Captain of the Enterprise had never accepted its supposed necessity. Today it seemed especially tedious, perhaps because of his communication with Spock. In the aftermath of the Genesis resurrection of his First Officer the two men had embarked on an intimate relationship that had been startling in its intensity and need. For years the inseparability of the two officers had been legendary and it was even more so upon Spock's return. Then the years began to add up for Kirk. Middle age spread, the greying of hair, aches and pains all common in humans, but not in a certain Vulcan. Not that the Vulcan stayed the same, but the accumulation of his years seemed so gradual, despite the torment of his death and return to life. It seemed inevitable that things would change. Needing more from his life, Jim Kirk had asked for the dissolution of the bond between the two. He had adamantly proclaimed his love for the Vulcan, but also had informed him that for whatever reason it was not enough. Spock had asked for time, but fate had stepped in in the form of a message from Sarek, stating that Amanda was ill and had asked for Spock to visit. Spock had immediately gone, hoping that in the interval Kirk would change his mind. As evidenced by Kirk's communication to Spock on Vulcan, he did not change his mind and certainly he hoped that his one-time lover would go along. Rubbing at his forehead where a headache lurked, Jim knew that Spock truly did not desire the break, but would never consider it logical to stand in the way. He had always followed; Jim had always led. Suddenly, the headache reached an intensity that was breathtaking and then began to ease away. "It is done," whispered through his mind and then all that remained was a vague emptiness that soon faded. ***** Six months later Admiral Kirk was at wit's end. He had taken to spending many hours at his office, trying to live up to his reputation as a diplomat and defender of Starfleet. So it was that he frowned heavily when his aide announced that an important visitor wished to speak with him. Scarcely had he started to protest, when the door swished open to admit Sarek of Vulcan. "Ambassador, I did not realize you were on Earth." It had been some time since he had seen his former lover's father. "Admiral, I have come to return something which belongs to you." "Me?" Sarek held out a ring to the astonished officer. "But that's...." "Your mother's ring. You had it made large enough for my son to wear. He asked me to return it to you. I have done so and shall now take my leave." "Wait, I just wanted to tell you that I was sorry to hear about Amanda. I know you...and Spock must grieve for her." Sarek, who had his back to the officer, hesitated and then replied, "Thank you for your words, but you need not concern yourself with my son's...feelings." "What? Why?" "He died two days after she who was my wife. He willed himself to stay alive long enough to insure that the bond between the two of you was dissolved." Kirk blanched. "I...I hadn't heard...." "No, I have managed to keep the news quiet. After traveling to Mt. Seleya to lay their katras to rest, I have been in solitude until I knew I had to come here to confront you." Before Kirk could reply, the door to the office opened quietly, allowing a young woman to enter. "Jim, you should feel him kick. He's truly your son." The blonde-haired woman stopped, embarrassed, and began to apologize for intruding. "It's all right, Karen. This is Ambassador Sarek of Vulcan. He's an old...friend. Ambassador, this is my wife, Karen." Sarek carefully perused the very pregnant woman's body and then politely remarked, "I am honored. I did not realize that Admiral Kirk had married. May I offer congratulations?" The blonde dimpled. "Thank you. It's still a surprise to me that I could ever meet and marry such a wonderful man, but please don't let me interrupt. Jim, I just wanted to tell you that I went to see the doctor and everything is fine. I'll see you at home." The young woman dashed out the door as speedily as her awkward body would allow her, leaving two stunned men in her wake. Silence built for some time until Sarek quietly asked, "That is why?" "I suppose you could say that. I...I loved your son, but I needed more. I guess I've always needed all that life had to offer." "Spock always said that was something he admired about you. Your willingness to go and take what you needed from life. Perhaps that is one reason that I was not in favor of your bonding. I did not believe that my son would be enough for you." "I tried, I really did. We were happy...for a long time and then I looked in the mirror. I knew my time was short and his was not or so I believed." "Admiral, when Spock arrived at Vulcan to see his mother, I could see that he was...unhappy," the Ambassador grimaced as if the word tasted bad, "but I did not question him about it until one night just before his mother went into a coma as you would call it. By that time, we had finally realized that the disease was one that only humans could contract and that by being with his mother, it was very likely that my son would succumb as well. His Vulcan heritage helped to delay the severity of the symptoms, but by the time you contacted him, he knew the results were...inevitable. That is why he agreed to sever your bond. He feared that even though it was not of the deepest level, it might prove painful to you should he die with it intact. His last words were of you," Sarek imparted with sadness. Hazel eyes stared at the man who was a legend on Vulcan and in the Federation. "I...I...." "Kroykah! I did not come here just to bring back your ring or to listen to your pleas of ignorance. I came here to kill you. Perhaps you will not believe that since you know of the Vulcan...distaste for killing. However, I tell you now I did intend to do so because your need superseded my son's. He didn't even consider a healing trance although there was a possibility it might have saved his life. You were his life and he did not care to exist without you." Kirk took a step backwards. "Why...why did you change your mind or have you?" "I decided that I could not kill the one person my son loved, and having seen your wife, I cannot deprive her and the child of your life." Without another word, Sarek swept out the door, needing to find a quiet place to meditate. Kirk was never sure how he made it home that evening, but he roused himself enough to do so and even managed to greet his wife who met him at the door. As soon as he could do so, he extricated himself from her company to head up the steps to the room which he had had specially created. The domed room gave him a magnificent view of the stars, one that could calm and soothe as nothing else. Gazing up at the place in the sky where Eridani would glow blood red, James T. Kirk whispered, "Don't you see, Spock? I had to try. I had to try." THE END ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ ASCEM messages are copied to a mailing list.
