Q contracts a respiratory virus, but its treatment has the side effect of making him euphorically happy. Once it wears off, withdrawal makes him intensely depressed and he nearly decides to commit suicide. With the help of sedatives, Sanaharrar and Naomi, Q eventually recovers.

The Dilkinen, a race once tormented by Q, have heard of his powerless state and demand his surrender. They eventually kidnap and torture Naomi, bringing Q to their ship. Only a change of heart by the Dilkinen and the timely arrival of a starbase ship save the pair.

Q and Naomi have recovered from the Dilkinen attack, but Naomi remains depressed and fearful. Then an ex-lover invites her and Q for a visit with his family. The vacation is not entirely restful, but Naomi recovers her spirits and Q obtains a telepathic bodyguard, which alleviates his fears for Naomi if she stays with him.
