Odo's voice was pitched low and he spoke gently, but Kira heard him nonetheless, smiling as she roused from sleep. "You are very, very pretty." Kira tried unsuccessfully to pry open an extremely uncooperative eye. It had been a very late night and she felt as if she'd barely had any sleep. She couldn't even lift her head up and gave up the attempt, hoping he could see she was waking. "Oh, yes," Odo practically purred. Kira sighed contentedly, smiling, eyes still closed. She could listen to that particular tone of voice all night. Sometimes she *had*... "And cuddly. Did you know you were cuddly?" Her smile widened, feeling very content and dozy. "And so cute. Do you know how cute you are?" Kira's smile grew radiant as she nodded and made a stronger effort to open her bleary eyes. She tried to swallow past a dry tongue and began to work her jaw. This elicited a yawn, which made her jaw crack and caused her to wince. __Getting older, Nerys. Better start working out more. Maybe running that massage program Dax goes on about.__ "Easy now. There's no need to rush." Kira rubbed at her jaw and managed to peel one eye open. Which promptly shuttered before she got a glimpse of anything aside from her pillow. She sighed again. "It's okay. We've got *all* morning*." Kira smiled again, relaxing. Trust Odo to remind her they could stay in bed all day if they wanted. She felt a wave of warmth and affection. He made her feel so loved. "Are you hungry? Did you eat enough last night?" She shook her head to the first and nodded at the second, thinking of the large dinner she'd had at the new restaurant on the Upper Promenade. Something Julian had said was Italian food. Something called a pizza. Strange round, flat human food. She'd only ordered and eaten one, but still it made her feel as if she eaten an entire Algorian mammoth. "How about something to drink then?" She shook her head again, grateful for such a solicitous lover, and finally managed to open her eyes. She looked over to her beloved... who was faced away from her on the bed, one long arm reaching over to the bedside table where something moved. She frowned, blinked and focused on... a tribble. A particularly fuzzy white and brown tribble about the size of her fist. It was next to a small pile of what she recognized as a handful of Cardassian groats. It didn't seem to be eating, merely nuzzling at the food dispiritedly, apparently full. "Not thirsty?" Odo murmured, stroking it gently with a single finger. The tribble wriggled a little and seemed to stretch to try to press against his hand. The constable smiled and began to lovingly carress the happy creature that began to trill its contentment loud enough for Kira Nerys to hear it across the bed. It apparently did not want food, but some attention. "Who's my little precious one, eh?" Odo said soothingly. Kira smiled at his tone, swallowed a little to clear her throat. "Should I be jealous?" she managed to ask in a sleep-roughened voice. Odo swiftly turned and smiled at her. "Nerys? I thought you'd sleep until afternoon." She shook her head, still amused, and indicated the tribble with her chin. "Where'd that come from? I thought all the tribbles had been removed from the station?" "They were except for those that Bashir kept to study. This is one of them. He marked them." Odo gently lifted a bit of the tribble's furr where she could see something shiny, a small metal tag, that stuck out from it's skin. "See?" She nodded and he continued, still petting the animal, "After I reformed this morning I heard an odd noise in the vent shaft and went to look. And it was all alone in there, warbling piteously." His voice changed to a softer higher pitch. "Weren't you, little one? Did you escape from the cold Infirmary with all those nasty bright lights?" Kira smiled at his tone of voice and then remembered, "Didn't Julian sterilize them, too?" "Yes. At least, I recall him saying he was going to." Odo gently scratched the tribble's back and it purred loudly. "If he hadn't, the station would have been overrun by now." The colonel relaxed, laying her head back on the pillow. She watched her lover communing with the tiny animal. Not that it needed saying, but she felt the need to fill the silence punctuated only with cooing, trilling noises. "So you rescued it." It wasn't a question. Odo looked back to her. "Well, I couldn't leave it alone in there. It's probably been wandering the station, looking for its friends, wondering where they went to." Odo turned back to the tribble and began to stroke it again. "Weren't you little fellow? All alone. Poor little thing." Kira arched both brows at this, bemused. "Did you tell Julian you found it?" "Well, no. Not yet. It's still very early. I... didn't want to wake anyone." Odo's voice dropped again into a soft, soothing tone as he picked up the little animal and held it to his chest. "We wouldn't want that, now would we?" The colonel nodded, watching the pair. The tenderness in Odo's expression and the gentleness of his hands as they stroked the soft fur made her smile. "I guess that answers that question." "What?" She looked over at Odo who was looking at her questioningly. "I asked if I should be jealous." She smiled so he would understand she was being facetious. "Jealous? Of a tribble?" She arched a brow rather pointedly and he looked down to the soft, spotted creature which, despite having no visible eyes, seemed to feel his gaze and began to trill a bit louder. She smiled as she noticed his expression grew softer as he simply watched it and eventually gave in to the impulse to gently stroke its soft fur. After a moment he seemed to come back to himself, and he turned back to see her smiling. "There's... just something about them," Odo admitted. "I don't know. They seem to ... radiate love." "Well, that's okay, sweetheart. So long as you remember it's not the only thing one around here that loves you." "Nerys..." She was surprised at his expression, which was stunned and almost disbelieving, and thought back over what she'd said. __I said I loved him.__ (-|-) * * * (-|-) * * * (-|-) 2b cont'd [Non-text portions of this message have been removed] Yahoo! I thought you knew," she whispered. Odo spoke a bit hesitantly. "I... I didn't figure you hated me. But I didn't know how much you cared." She reached out and put her hand on his chest, beside the tribble. "I love you, Odo. I should have said so sooner." "Nerys..." His gratified gaze met her own and he carefully put the tribble down on his lap, before leaning over and kissing her. She responded with ardor and as their kiss grew deeper and more fervent, the tribble filled the room with the sound of very contented cooing. ... Some hours later, Odo and Kira were contentedly wrapped up in each other, smiling as they watched the tribble scuttle back and forth between them, when the comm panel chime disturbed the room's peace. "Bashir to Odo." "Odo here." "Constable, one of my laboratory animals seems to be missing. I checked the tag signal and it appears the animal is in your quarters. Have you seen a tribble?" "Yes, doctor. We found it." "Oh. Well... could you bring it back to the Infirmary when you have a moment?" "Very well. Odo out." Kira could not mistake the grumpy tone in her partner's voice. "What's the matter, sweetheart?" He looked at the small animal and sighed. "Seems... unfair somehow, to have to return it to the laboratory." "Well, it does belong to Julian. But... maybe he'd let you have one if you asked him?" To her surprise, Odo seemed a bit taken aback by this suggestion. "Me? Keep a... a pet? No, I don't think so." "Why not?" "I was in a cage for most of my early years. I won't imprison another creature simply for my own entertainment." His tone was adamant and his expression fierce. Kira felt bad for having brought up painful memories. "I'm sorry, Odo." Her quiet tone made him look to her and he sighed. "I didn't mean to destroy the mood." "You didn't. I just didn't know you felt so strongly about not keeping pets." "I won't stop someone else from having any, but... for me, it's wrong." He sighed. "I was glad to find this little fellow. And pleased for the time I was able to spend with it. But I don't want to keep it so it's beholden to me for its food and water and liberty. I just... I just feel it's wrong." "All right. Nothing was said for a long moment, and they watched the little creature trundle along the bedclothes, making small chirruping sounds. Occasionally, Odo would reach a long finger out and stroke its back. Kira sighed. "Well, I suppose we'd better get this little guy back to where he belongs." "How can you tell it's a male?" "I can't. Just an expression, Odo. I don't think it matters." "Oh." They both got up and the Colonel began to dress. Soon the trio was in the Infirmary, where the Doctor smiled upon sight of the little creature. "There you are, you little rascal. How did you get free, eh?" Kira watched as Odo reluctantly handed back the small creature. "Well, thank you both very much. I appreciate it," Julian said, turning to take the tribble back to the lab. "Julian!" He turned at Kira's call. "Yes, Colonel?" She smiled, looking over briefly at Odo. "Julian, do you think it would be all right for Odo to... oh, I don't know... *visit* with the tribbles from time to time?" The doctor was non-plussed. "Er... well... I suppose. I don't see why not. I'm not conducting any real experiments with them so it wouldn't affect anything adversely. I'm just studying their metabolism. It's really quite fascinating." "Then it's settled." Kira smiled at the constable. "That is, if it's okay with you, Odo." His eyes expressed what his facial features could not as he nodded, and his expression was deeply gratified. "I think I'd like that very much." "Good," Bashir said. "If you'd like then, Constable, to follow me - I'll show you where they're kept." Odo looked from Bashir to Kira and she nodded. "Go on, sweetheart. I'll see you after shift." To her surprise and Julian's amusement, Odo gazed at her for a moment, then leaned over and gave her a quick, but heartfelt kiss. "*Thank you*, Nerys." Then he followed the doctor and the tribble into the other room, leaving a smiling Colonel watching them go. ~ FINIS ~ ------ On RAFL (Rene's fan mailing list) Chris wrote: "Hmmm ... the image of Odo cuddling a tribble certainly makes *me* feel warm and fuzzy ..."
